July 14th of 1789 was the storming of the Bastille, in Paris, France, the political crisis lead to a revolt. This revolt was also the beginning of the French Revolution. Since then it has been annually celebrated as Bastille Day on July 14th. This was also the French period for The Netherlands. It belonged to France from 1795 till 1813, first as a vassal state and from 1810 as part of France. Thus it really did affect us as a nation and also Limburg, as a Province where my ancestors and I grew up, in the very south. So many Dutch were drafted to fight for Napoleon. Pierre, was the elder brother of my paternal great-great-great Grandfather and he died at the age of 19, serving Napoleon. For years, Le Jacquard Français has celebrated Bastille Day on July 14, here in the USA.
For their customers they served French wine and cheese and we were also gifted with a beautiful all cotton tea towel from Le Jacquard Français. Unfortunately, due to the economy this no longer is being celebrated.
The store in Atlanta, Georgia has been closed; one less French Connection for me...
But there is an Yves Delorme outlet in Chattanooga, TN and that is only 4 hours away.
You can also order on line at the Yves Delorme Online Outlet (click link) or call in at one of the stores listed: Yves Delorme Locations (click link).
Starting on July 14, in celebration of Bastille Day they are having a hefty 20% off!
Just ordered our 100% Egyptian Cotton Batiste twin comforters in Caribbean Light 14 oz goose down.
We have one on our bed for the summer and it makes you dream like being on a cloud. As light as a feather...

Oh you asked if my father was in the Rotary, yes he was, that's how we got the exchange student. It is so cute because Kristina's father was in the Rotary and now She and her husband are also! ReplyDeleteYou know their is still a french Prince who is living and he has two boys twins, the all have still the name of Louis, from the last king. He wrote a book. And his father of this prince died on wintersport and broke his neck on a wrope, that is a coïncidence, because Louis XVI died under the guillotine and broke his neck.
Have a nice day,
Janny

Dearest Mariette, Thank you for this most informative and lovely post. I have always admired the Yves Delorme linens. I don't own any because they always seems to be out of my budget. I did go over to look at their Outlet site. Perhaps I can choose something there. Thanks for the links.
ReplyDeleteYour Family connection all the way back to Napolean is interesting. Having been born in America I sometimes fail to remember the the European countries are relatively small, more the size of our states. They are historically entwined to a degree that is difficult for Americans to properly comprehend. Thanks for all the interesting facts. I never knew the origin of "Left and Right" political reference. July 14th was an important day for the French people and the world.
I always love reading you posts. I learn something every time.
Love to you,
Ginger
Oh, I totally forgot this date!
ReplyDeleteIt's the most popular part of the history, if you could put it like that. I read about French revolution today in Marcuse's Mind and Revolution. How could I not to remember the date? They really confused me with Friday the 13th and stuff. :)
Liebe Mariette,
ReplyDeletedas war wieder sehr informativ und interessant. Und die Handtücher sind einfach toll.
Schöne Grüße, Johanna

Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for letting us know about this particular day; which is considered to be the beginning of the French Revolution. OH, I never knew it is this day. Also for you, the French period for The Netherlands☆ Sometimes it amazes me that you know about your ancestors well; haha, I don't know much and it is too late, as not many left who can teach me.
Beautiful damask(ok?) from Le Jacquard Français♡♡♡
I needed to check some things I didn't know; I really appreciate preciou information from you, my dear friend!!!Have a wonderful weekend,

Dear Mariette, such an informative post and so amazing you can trace your ancestors so far back. Learning about how the 'left' and 'right'started is something I don't think many people know, so thank you for that. What a shame that your favorite French store closed with the lovely tea towels. Wishing you a wonderful weekend. Love to you xx
ReplyDeleteDear Mariette,

Ger
