On May 08, 1987 we both drove with Mom & Dad to Florida as Pieter had taken some days off at Campbell's Soup.
Here we are in St. Augustine, Florida on one of the old walls at Castillo De San Marcos.
Staying one night at the Oldest City in USA...
On August 4, 1999 my youngest brother and his wife went there with me.

The day before on May 8, 1987 we entered for Mom & Dad their 4th State within the United States of America; Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.
I'm wearing the perfectly fitting cream colored jeans that Pieter bought for me while in China the previous month.
Mom & Dad and both of us had each a room at the Days Inn in St. Augustine, FL
Now it is called Days Inn by Wyndham St Augustine/Historic Downtown (click the link).

We sit on the wall, shown at the bottom right in this photo and the fort is behind us, also the little building seen above my head in photo, is seen here above in the lower right section.
Behind Mom & Dad's heads in the top photo you can see this kind of turret with the openings for firing the canons. Click for going to website for more views of this star shaped 17th century fort.
This photo from HISTORIC ST. AUGUSTINE, FL — PART 1 by Stan Paregien, comes the closest by the one Pieter took form Mom & Dad and me, more or less from the same spot, except that we were on the wall to the left near the water!
We took Mom & Dad also to Gatorland and the show with the snakes was at 10:00 and we left for Kennedy Space Center by 10:30.
Mom, Dad and me at Kennedy Space Center on May 9, 1987.
On Mother's Day, May 10, we did visit Epcot.
This is a photo of me at our hotel in Kissimmee, Florida where I'm feeding a squirrel.
On Monday, May 11, we did visit Sea World and here we are near our car, picnicking on our blanket.
Yep, we had to live off a budget and there was no time for going to a restaurant as well.
This is a photo I did scan from Dad's collection that he showed me in May when he was fondly remembering this trip from 1987.
We enjoyed the show of Baby Shamu the Orka and the walrus, sea lion and otter-shows.
The dolphins and the sharks with the glass tunnel.
By 15:00 we drove home to Georgia and arrived there by 21.45 as Pieter had to start at work next day and he had to catch up on a lot!
Hope you enjoyed this fond memory and thanks for your visit and comment!

Hello Mariette, You were lucky to see this historic city with your parents. It is interesting that the renaissance of St. Augustine, starting in the late 19th century, was due to Henry Flagler, a wealthy man from Cleveland, Ohio who built up much of Florida, especially in the east and south.
ReplyDelete--Jim
Dearest Jim,
DeleteBoth of us have visited this historic city many times while serving as a tour guide to relatives.
But Henry Morrison Flagler was born in Hopewell, New York and at the age of 14 after completing the eighth grade, he moved to Bellevue, Ohio. He has been quite successful in business. First in the Salt Company and he entered the grain business. He acquainted John D. Rockefeller, and during the 1860s, Cleveland, OH was quickly developing as the center of the oil refining industry. From there the two worked together, also with Andrews: https://flaglermuseum.us/history/flagler-biography
His name is strongly connected with Florida!
Hugs,
Mariette
The granddaughter of Pieter's former Dutch neighbor who immigrated to the US studied at Flagler College.
Nice fortress. We visited the Kennedy Space Center and also saw Shamu at Sea World in 1989.
ReplyDeleteNice memories Marianne.
Dearest Sami,
DeleteGood for you for having visited this part of Florida as well.
We have done so numerous times with relatives!
You changed my name again...
Hugs,
Mariette
Mi piacerebbe visitare il castello, deve essere magnifico.
ReplyDeleteBuona giornata
Caro Giancarlo,
DeleteDavvero è magnifico!
Un abbraccio,
Mariette
Beautiful photos from your trip to Florida. I always wanted to visit St. Augustine when I lived in Florida but never had a chance. I remember going near Kennedy Space Center to see the launch but again, didn't have a chance to visit there!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your fond memories with your parents :-) Have a great weekend, Mariette!
Dearest Tamago,
DeleteWhen living and working somewhere, one never has the time to do the touristy things... We even have not seen certain places in our birth country and neither in Italy where we worked and lived.
Fond memories for us indeed and who knows, one day you both get a chance to visit there...!
Hugs,
Mariette
Lovely squirrel. Did it take the nuts out of your hand?
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteThat squirrel sure came to eat from my hand; no nuts as I had none with me. Here at home I've had them eat from my hand as well. You can tame almost all animals.
Hugs,
Mariette
I loved this and its pictures of St. Augustine and the family. I love St. Augustine as I am very aware of its history and founding and who the principles were at the time...all the who's and why's and wherefores as history is my forte. I enjoyed the top view of Castillo de San Marcos. It took me back to my reading the depictions of the battles there. You always provide a well detailed and interesting description of the sites you and Pieter visit. Seeing your parents is a sweet plus for us here. XX
ReplyDeleteDearest Katie Isabella,
DeleteThank you and yes, the history of St. Augustine is very interesting. A must see for all tourists for getting a taste of years ago.
We both cherish many fond memories of this area with family.
Hugs,
Mariette
Loved sharing your memories with you. There comes a time that is all we have. Always makes me happy when you drop by.
ReplyDeleteDearest LV.,
DeleteYou are so right about reaching a time when all we have is memories...
Hugs,
Mariette
Have a nice week hugs Nina
ReplyDeleteDearest Nina,
DeleteThank you and the very same for you and your kids!
Hugs,
Mariette
Herinneringen blijven...
Liefs,
Mariette
Great photos of your Mom and Dad. Your Mom has a happy smile on her face sitting at the wall with your Dad. Grand pictures of all of you.
ReplyDeleteI love visiting St. Augustine. My husband has a friend who retired there after he left the military. Great pictures you captured of the Castillo De San Marcos. The St. Augustine beach is nice too.
Beautiful place indeed.
betsy
Dearest Betsy,
DeleteThose photos are treasures and they certainly keep the memories alive!
Mom was very happy while here with us. She could relax and enjoy the meals without having to prepare them herself etc. Her entire life she has waited on my Dad and on her 7 children...
St. Augustine is always a great place to visit and we've been there numerous times!
Hugs,
Mariette
I know I tell you this all the time but it is absolutely amazing that you have such detailed memories of all your travels and that you have so many pictures and memorabilia to document those times. It's a wonderful feeling to go back through old photos and revisit those happy moments.
ReplyDeleteDearest Tammy,
DeleteYes, revisiting those happy moments is exactly what Pieter is doing on his new iPad Pro 12.9 with stunning clarity to view our videos from trips, family, garden and such. Those are treasures to have and I feel very blessed and rich because of it. Keeping a leather journal and making photos, saving letters and creating videos with lots of explanation is priceless now! One day that will be all that is left for me too...
Hugs,
Mariette
