My Handwork on PERMANENT Display at Teaching Museum South in Fulton County near Atlanta, Georgia

Proudly showing my hand knitted silk lace shawl in a peacock pattern... see link below post.
Wool skirt is one of my own sewing creations to match my Chanel bag in taupe.
Shirt is an Outlet find from Escada...

This was the main piece of my handwork that got to be on a PERMANENT display at Teaching Museum South in Fulton County near Atlanta, Georgia. This is part of the Fulton County Schools in Hapeville, a two hour one-way drive for us.

On December 31, 1993 a person from the Georgia State University with a photographer came to our home for the interview and permission to use some of my hand made lace for the above purpose.

We did serve both a warm lunch meal as it is one-way 2 hours driving distance.

You find photo taken by photographer in link below: Today I Turned 17! in regard to my proud United States Citizenship

It all started with and add in the Holland Times, the publication for all Dutch related people in and around Atlanta.
The above video shows the hand made knitted silk lace shawl being framed WRONG SIDE FACING OUT!
For such a meticulous knitted peacock lace pattern it makes a HUGE difference RIGHT SIDE versus WRONG SIDE...
Deborah A. Duchon, Research Associate for Applied Research in Anthropology at Georgia State University
So I contacted her... that's how the interview came to be and she left with several of my items that I let her take with her for a very small reimbursement as I felt kind of honored to be included in such a PERMANENT Display.
Yes, on Friday, May 27, 1994, I got up at 5:00 AM for being there for the hands-on workshop and demonstration of my crafts
Me at the Teaching Museum with part of my display
CROCHET (THE NETHERLANDS)
The artist studied horticulture with emphasis on mushrooms.
Her husband's job brought them to Georgia – he is also a
mushroom expert. They both now work as international
mushroom consultants. The artist learned crochet as a child
and now uses it to occupy time on long business trips:
'There's not much to do at night in the Indonesian
countryside,' she says. 'Luckily, I can always crochet.'
~
Sadly, two of my most sentimental hand crocheted lace handkerchiefs got stolen that morning...
One was my bridal handkerchief. Such sentimental value can never be replaced...
I could buy again the fine Swiss batiste and the French DMC tatting yarn, adding about 7 hours of patience to make another one.
See link below where I recreated a replica of it.
This got published in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on June 9, 1994...
Deborah did send me this poor copy at the end of the year.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution wrote a huge error:
Youngsters (yep, 150 rude kids that screamed the one insult after another... calling me a racist and on and on) also got to see embroidery of all kind crafted by Vedder, (NOT TRUE it was crocheted lace work and knitted lace!) who lives in
Dublin, GA, and works as a mushroom
consultant. She says she has been creating
things with her hands since she was a child.
Vedder said she learned to crochet
as a child because school officials in Holland
saw it as a way for children to build motor skills.
On July 16, 1994 upon return from our work in Indonesia, I had to contact Ms. Duchon again as from the other lady at the Teaching Museum South there was no reply in regard to my missing crocheted lace handkerchiefs.
Also I remarked; Being a teacher myself, I have also to comment on the far too big groups you had that day (twice 75 kids for one hour!). No way that one can handle them. Not the least that they get proper attention to actually learn something!
All I ever got was the above poor copy, neither photos as promised earlier... Never heard about the missing pieces.

Due to the glare of those glass cases in the above video, Pieter wanted to return somewhat later for making professional photos with the right equipment.
The entire display had vanished – their version of PERMANENT?

Indeed both of us did LEARN A LOT!

  4. What a shame that your beautiful, original work that was supposed to be on permanent display was stolen, Mariette. It never ceases to amaze me how thoughtless and careless some people can be. Well, at least you have the memories.

No, stolen were my bridal handkerchief in Swiss cotton batiste with crocheted lace edging in French DMC thread. Don't know where the 'permanent' display went... Weird and it sure is a shame.

  5. Hello Mariette, It's too bad they wasted this real opportunity to learn a lot about Dutch skills and culture as practiced so well by you. You are right that they were inviting disaster by having such large groups. Small groups of children can be charming and in the right frame of mind for learning, but in large groups a different dynamic prevails and the children act up.

These officials (unlike your readers) little knew that the items displayed were just the tip of the iceberg of what you can accomplish, and they missed an opportunity of further collaboration with you and Pieter.

    1. Dearest Jim,
The entire project took way too long to be accomplished, that in itself might have been a warning sign. Almost one year after the interview, we received the invitation for the 'official' opening of the display. We missed it because of our international consulting commitments. In-between, they asked several of the women to conduct those teaching classes and also bring additional pieces to show (for lack of having the ones donated, displayed by then!).
Could not believe the groups of 75 children and that turned out to be a disaster and they were far from disciplined by their teachers! Aside from the visiting lady working with refugee women in Georgia, that more than likely ended up with my bridal handkerchief and the other one... Such a shame and quite shocking!
Some people dealing with certain jobs seem not to be qualified at all...
My readers here, we both value a lot more!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

I have though deleted them as they have a an internet link and I will not publish anything containing a link. I cannot do for one what I will not do for others. Sorry.

Thank you for your compliment and yes, finally after our decades of living a gipsy life, doing worldwide consulting, we find time to catch up on our slides, photos and videos made over the years but never a spare moment for enjoying them. Since I've made it all digital, now it can be worked into their story and my husband Pieter especially enjoys viewing them on his iPadPro.

  11. Liebste Mariette,

      Sara

Yep, you for sure will be using shutters in Colorado.
Our 1,500,000 million miles seem a lot at a time where travel is SO restricted...
Thank you and no, as I wrote in my previous post about it, only used it as the model in the photo held one. Haha, when Pieter was getting knee problems, before seeing the orthopedic surgeon, he used his Mom's teak cane and this one. It also makes a nice weapon, when used reversed... But Pieter got advised not to make long walks anymore as his knee cartilage was almost completely worn and by not putting pressure on the knee he would manage to live with it. Biking therefore is good as you don't put any pressure on the knee like with walking.
That antique gold cameo is one of my first gifts from Pieter... love it still very much!
Glad you enjoy to read some of our many tales. We loved to live life to the fullest by being daring. Only that way you create memories worth reliving.
