Fond Memories of our 1st Trip into México - Tijuana

On Saturday, March 9 of 1985, Campbell Soup's Pescadero farm manager Don Richards and wife Donna, with whom we'd stayed for 3 nights (see previous post below), did drop us off at the airport in San Francisco for our flight to San Diego at 13:30.
Pieter had to lecture at the 5th North American Conference...
We stayed at the Sheraton, Harbor Island (East) in room 408 and met with several international friends!
Together with Pieter's Dutch friend Chris van Zon, we did drive on Sunday, March 10, after breakfast, to Tijuana in México.
Pieter and I in Tijuana holding hands...
This was at the Don Quijote restaurant where we all three ate lunch.
Guess this was Señor Don Quijote himself and I pulled his beard...
Glad friend Chris captured some photos from both of us!
We enjoyed strolling around that Sunday!
Chris is watching something and see that little girl looking up at him...
It made me laugh.
That young man is hopeful that we will purchase some of his ceramics but HOW to fly home with it?!
Macrame plant hangers, bags and baskets... so many unique hand made things.
An endless selection and all on a Sunday!
Basura (trash bin...).
All we did buy were two Samba Balls and you can see them hanging in our staircase area, previous post.
At that time Tijuana was only about 600,000 inhabitants and now 2,200,000 and it is no longer safe.
Adiós Tijuana, we have to go back to our San Diego Sheraton hotel, getting ready for the Conference's reception at 18:00!
At least I could practice my Spanish for a couple of fun hours.
For Victor's comment that it looked like a very hot day. No, it definitely was NOT and you also could tell by what people were wearing...

Especially for you, I've added Tijuana's March weather temperatures at the bottom of post...

It sure was awesome at that time.
No, I don't speak many languages, only seven...

  4. I imagine that market looks much the same today, if it's still there. Such a huge population growth, though! Of course, that's the case all over the world, to the detriment of every other species on the planet. (But that's my own rant!)

You speak seven languages! That's amazing, you have a great aptitude for learning language, then. It's difficult to do as an adult. My uncle speaks four: his native German, English (their second/adopted language), French and now Italian, since he has lived in northern Italy for some years. But seven...! Impressive!

    1. Dearest Kim,
Guess the culture has not changed much in regard to things locally being made and offered at markets. The population has sky rocketed due to the average age being very young; contrary to the western countries where it is the opposite, more aging people.
Well, since I had to do the training in the harvesting and post harvesting area, those people have not had higher education so I had to meet them at their turf! It is just a matter of memory... Roman languages such as French, Spanish and Italian are related and that helps. And the will to help people also motivates. Just like your uncle, living there is the best practice; seeing and hearing nothing but that particular language.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. Lovely memories here Mariette, you are lucky to have so many good photos to record your trips. It's such a shame that many countries around the world have changed making them unsafe to visit. I think Aimee and I went to Egypt just before things became unsafe there also, was an awesome visit.

    1. Dearest Grace,
Yes, it is very sad that so many countries have become unsafe due to political reasons and/or crime levels.
We were there JIT = Just In Time, as you and Aimee visiting Egypt prior to it being unsafe.
      Hugs,

  7. Hello Mariette, How lucky you and Pieter were to get to Tijuana before it was spoiled. It is increasingly difficult to find unspoiled places these days, and if a new one does come to light, the prices zoom out of sight immediately, then it gets overcrowded and passé.

Yes, you are so right about newly discovered travel destinations that quickly get overrun and it becomes very noisy and indeed passé.
      We cherish these memories.

  12. So lovely memories and photos of your first visit to Mexico!
I was almost there back in 1996...staying at the San Diego Sheraton Harbor for a Congress and with my colleagues we wanted to visit Tijuana, but there was such a long line of cars waiting to cross the borders, so we decided we would not waste our time waiting. Instead, we went to the San Diego Zoo, which we enjoyed very much!!!!
Many hugs, deares Mariette!!!! Have a lovely weekend!!!!

How special that you too went to the very hotel for a Congress! Small world...
That was already 11 years later and I bet it made quite a difference at the border and everywhere. You opted wisely and we did the very same, not visiting the San Diego Zoo but Sea World and that was excellent!

    1. Cara Olga,
