Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Commercial Mushroom Cultivation Education. His practical handbook is in 9 languages and is called the MUSHROOM BIBLE: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2020/08/modern-mushroom-growing-2020-harvesting.html
Hello Mariette, I suppose that yard and garden structures are so ephemeral that we are aware they will need frequent repair or rebuilding. However, Pieter knew, even in building his reinforced bridge, that the new stronger structure had to be kept in scale with the rest of the garden, or it would have ruined the effect. Floods have terrible power, and are a good reminder that Mother Nature can never be completely tamed. Flash floods in dry times when the baked ground cannot absorb much water can be especially treacherous. Also, in places like Ohio, rains and melting snows result in Spring freshets that are awesome to see--and best stayed far away from! --Jim
Dearest Jim, Yes, you are so right about yard and garden structures being so ephemeral... Hard to watch and accept at times but indeed ruining the effect was no option. The power of floods and Mother Nature in general is teaching us a lesson. Humans cannot tame her but for as long as we can, we have to enjoy her bounty. Hugs, Mariette
Dearest Sami, We never expected such rough waters... but Mother Nature is extremely strong in a negative way. Good soil with compost and plants gone so many times. Hugs, Mariette
Dearest Martha Jane, No, perseverance still cannot win from Mother Nature. She wears one out. My Pieter sure is multitalented and hard working all his life. Hugs, Mariette
Unfortunately there is no way to estimate exactly how fierce mother nature will be at any given time. Pieter did well to construct the bridge single handedly, a man of many talents ✨
Sudden heavy rain storms are so dangerous - rivers can overflow in no time - the recent Tennessee flooding tragedy was so very, very sad. Pieter the bridge builder - that should be added - if not already done - to his resumé!!!! Mary -
Dearest Mary, Yes, living in the South has taught us many forces by Mother Nature. But even up North or back home in colder climates you can see such flooding tragedies. Pieter's resumé would become way too long... Hugs, Mariette
You and Pieter sure did overcome a lot of things -- and then you BUILT things to further overcome! We have seen flooding in our state, but nothing like some other places have experienced. (Ours is more along the line of tornadoes, which I read you have gone through also.) But I'm so impressed with all the work you both did! I think it turned out beautifully! // I saw your question on my blog about your comment not showing up... it's beccause I have my anti-spam plugin set to manually moderate comments… you have to allow me time to come in and do that (several hours to a couple days depending on what I’m doing). But I'm so happy to see you came to visit! Blessings to you, Mariette!
Dearest Diana, Yes, we have overcome quite some challenges and never ever gave up. It builds character and makes a person strong; just like you yourself have managed to go on in difficult times. Hugs, Mariette
Hello Mariette, Your picture taken August 1998 looks just like our little creek area when the water is flowing through, overflowing I should say. We put a metal bridge over the creek area and when the next storm came, it washed out. Pieter is so good at everything he does. I have read some of your previous posts of his work. Hugs, Betsy
Dearest Betsy, Oh, such a romantic flowing creek can suddenly turn into a monster and it proves that wood nor metal is up to withstand the power of water. Yes, if you have two left hands, go live in an apartment without any garden work. We love being in nature and enjoy the many good days! Hugs, Mariette
Querida Antónia, Sí, las ideas y el enfoque de Pieter siempre fueron buenos, pero no podemos trabajar contra el poder de la Madre Naturaleza. Abrazos, Mariette
Bravo Pieter sempre al lavoro!

Pieter is a good engineer. Well done for solving the problem.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Dearest Victor,
DeleteThank you, he usually knows what he is doing but this was only temporarily solved...
Hugs,
Mariette
A nice structure. What a pity it got destroyed many times due to floods.

ReplyDeleteDearest Grace,
DeleteThat is so very true!
The bridge really looked very nice with the extended wood trail and yes, single handedly!

Mariette

Huge amount of water, and hard work!
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteYes, indeed unimaginable amounts of water over a short time.
The work here has always been hard but we did it.
Hugs,
Mariette

Hard work yes, but oh so rewarding when finished.
