Early July Huge Oak Tree Down

On July 11, the doorbell rang...
It was one of the back door neighbors.
Well, our vast property of 2.167 acres or 0.88 hectare, borders five different neighbors and additional neighbors across the street.
It was a livid neighbor... he demanded to speak to my husband.
'I'm sorry, my husband went to heaven on April 30...' I said.
He calmed a bit down and continued to tell me that a huge oak tree had fallen down and had taken one of his big trees down and it fell on our fence...
Next day I took my iPhone and went to our wood garden to assess the situation.
That is captured in above video...
We had been having so much rain all spring and summer, that the tree guy could not start due to the soil being too muddy for the use of his Bobcat.
I'd searched for someone that also would clear the underbrush.
My Pieter did that himself on
And the center bridge had to be taken up as it got destroyed by severe weather on February 12, 2024.
Center bridge destroyed by flood water... this needs to be taken up.
Center bridge and wild underbrush...
View towards street and 1st bridge
Center bridge to the right and sadly our pussy willow also got whacked down...
More underbrush...
Underbrush
View of 3rd bridge and more underbrush...
3rd bridge

On September 3, when I went to Atlanta to see my nephrologist at Emory, Mitchell from One Moore Tree Service tackled the job as it finally had dried out enough...
My first time via Angi and this person deserved his 5 stars!

Mitchell very well took over my Pieter's care for the underbrush...

It looked very messy but Mitchell did a great job on September 3 and with the underbrush being cut, things look a lot better.

Lovely property but way too vast for an invalid... 2.167 acres or 0.88 hectare.

  3. Your property is so big, Mariette, I know it can't be easy to take care of, especially by yourself. So happy that you found a reliable person to help with clearing the underbrush. Hopefully, Georgia won't see any more bad storms for a good long while. Blessings!

This person was really good for the job. There are lots of tree cutters but for the underbrush that was an issue.
There will be more storms but hoping it is not as destructive anymore.
      Hugs,

  5. Hello Mariette, It is too bad that so many features in your garden and landscape were lost recently, but it can be considered a homage to Pieter that the lovely landscape that you both created needed his special care to continue. Of course, gardens as living things always change, and yours is entering a new phase, but losing a big tree can be heart-breaking (not to mention expensive), and that's before adding in all the collateral damage. I am glad you found a someone dependable to repair the damage. Your yard is still very beautiful, and it must be so nice to look outside and see all that green.

Yes, it still is a true piece of paradise that we both shaped with our own hands.
Last night when I returned home from Ristorante da Maria, there was a deer on the driveway near garage. It ran over the lawn and stood behind the pond, looking again at me.
Guess it was roaming around for the pot plants with Hosta plants as one looked very much eaten off. The teenage helpers moved them to the front patio where they are less in the hot sun...
That is a blessing to live amidst nature!
      Hugs,

As for that neighbor, Pieter would wisely say: 'Aren't you glad you don't have to go home with him/her?' It is HIS problem, not mine.
Mitchell was an excellent and very caring worker and I sure am glad to have found him.
Yes, I'm mentally very strong—have too and with my special Angel Pieter, I will manage!

  8. It just never pays to go to someone demanding their attention. As this fellow found out, you had lost you Pieter and he didn't even know living so close by. I'm glad you had a dependable person come as soon as he knew was possible and do a great job. If you need this type of work again, you know who to call. Lynn and Precious

    1. Dearest Lynn and Precious,
No, demanding attention by rudeness is not the way to go.
Mitchell also defended me while I was at Emory hospital as the same neighbor demanded money for his fallen tree. Mitchell calmly told him that I didn't owe him anything as he files for insurance daily and knows the ins and outs but against natural storms or whatever there is no fault. Felt happy about a young and decent man standing up for me!
He will be back but might be helping out with the line men as that was his previous job. A good hearted person and I am patient.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  24. Liebe Mariette,

  27. Glad everything worked out. We used to own a house on a couple acres, and as lovely as it was to have the open space to enjoy, we were forever raking and blowing and cleaning and trimming (or paying others to do some of it). People don't realize the amount of work and expense that goes into larger properties.

    1. Dearest Peter,
Yes, that got taken care of in a good way. But there will be more!
Oh, when we purchased the adjacent lot in the mid 1990s we both were still strong and active. Since Pieter's quadruple bypass + stent in his neck in 2010 we started looking at things different. Still, with some help for the big trees, Pieter managed to repair the wooden bridges that he built and cut the underbrush in January 2022.
One can only admire large properties with a well kept garden as it is a lot of work!
