{BRITEX FABRICS & NOTIONS}

In several of my blog posts about My Sewing Creations, you have read my mention of buttons from BRITEX FABRICS or lining, thread, top stitching from BRITEX NOTIONS. Just like to show you this remarkable store in San Francisco, California. I've frequented that store on and on while doing consulting work on the west coast.
This is it! FOUR floors with fabrics and over 30,000 buttons! I'm telling you that is hard to make a choice! You can ask for swatch service as well, for a small fee they mail you a little piece of fabric. You can mail order from them. Now I'm very far away from this unique store; my all time favorite! I always keep their blog listed in my sidebar for whenever I might need to call upon them. You can check out their amazing stock right here: Britex Fabrics - Blog. Just click on all their options in the gray area at the top for getting just an idea how mind bogling this store really is. You have no idea how huge. My rayon cotton jacquard curtains in rose pattern, for covering the front door, are also from Britex fabrics. They did mail me a swatch first and then I ordered from them what I needed.
Does any of my readers know this store? Would love to hear about it!

{My Silk Quilted Vest Creation and YOUR Opinion Requested...}

Need your help and input here... This silk quilted fabric I once found at Britex Fabrics in San Francisco at the time when we frequently went to the west coast for consulting work. From a Burda pattern I did create this vest with one-piece single welted pockets. I am wearing this vest on my Escada pants with an Escada silk blouse. That's exactly the question I want to ask you... How do you like the blouse better; with bow or with a rose? Look below for the different looks and tell me what your opinion is!

  • On April 15, in front of our Quercus Virginiana Grand View Gold Oak.
  • I am holding our Sacha girl...
  • This shows you the bow and my hair pulled back in a pony tail.

  • Sacha also is studying that bow... So what do you think?

  • Sacha is very vocal and here she loudly voiced her opinion...
  • I am waiting for yours!

  • I used a Burda pattern and did a lot of top-stitching with Japanese silk thread, from Britex Notions.
  • Colors match very well and it is also completely lined in silk.

  • Using a French barrette clip, I created my own hair bow...

  • This was taken on Sunday, May 6 with my hair down and without the bow.
  • Have a look further and tell me what you like most.
  • This is inside our gazebo...
  • Wearing my Escada pants; Escada silk blouse and Escada pumps.

  • Hair down and here I've twirled the silk necktie into a rose...

  • Different look or not...?
  • Tell me what you like best.

  • Pushed my hair back so you get a better look at my rose...

  • Closeup view...

  • Even closer here.

  • One-piece single welt pockets and matching buttons from Britex Notions.

  • Detail of one-piece single welt pocket and the top-stitching done with silk thread.

  • Yes, they are real pockets!

  • In the back it has a bow and more top-stitching.

Hair down, versus pony tail...

  • Voilà - the back bow and now I'm eager to hear your opinion!

Thanks for your reply as it means a lot to me.

{Burda Pattern Jacket - My Sewing Creation}

For the St. Patrick's Festival of course one has to wear some GREEN. This year I did wear my self sewn  jacket from a nice Italian cotton piqué from Het Stoffenhuis, B. Veldhuis in Venlo/Netherlands. For the design I used a German Burda pattern; my all time favorite for excellent fit. Jacket has a one-button closure and a lapel. My notions I always get from Britex Fabrics in San Francisco. Just click the hyperlink and yes, they also do ship.
This jacket was a lot easier to sew; no lining!
Worn with an Escada jeans and Escada sleeveless rayon top.

My feisty Tiggy-Tiger girl liked it too...
Is green also a color in your wardrobe?

{My Sewing Creation}

As a door prize at one of the Rotary Club's District Conferences (April 2, 1995 at Jekyll Island, GA), I won 3 yards of woolen fabric... So out came the Burda patterns and I did sew this two piece suit. Completely lined in silk (from Britex Fabrics) with Japanese thread, and buttons, all from Britex Fabrics Notions done on October 28, same year and it turned out like this:
This double breasted camel wool suit jacket has a lapel and welt pockets with a double flap.
Pencil skirt with slit in the back is above the knee.
Six buttons in the front of the longer styled jacket.
That always covers your 'derrière' in a more flattering way. Another good detail that most high end labels implement. Every inch of fabric counts and those that offer cheaper versions, literally do cut corners at the expense of making us look less flattering.
Slit in skirt.
Six buttons on the sleeves...
The antique gold lapel watch you can see in detail at the very end...
Yes, complete with welt pockets and a double flap. That made this tricky construction even more of a challenge. Sure, I did study Fashion and Design but nevertheless, things don't come together easy.

  • Detail of the welt pockets with double flap as well as the sleeve slit with buttons.

  • Showing the skirt slit again.

  1. Lifted up my sweater enough so you could see the invisible zip and the way the waistband is done, with hook closure on the inside.

  • Invisible zips are a true sign of any upscale garment and years ago I did master this technique.

  • Detail of welt pocket with double flap.

  • Double flap lifted up and you can see the pocket entrance.
  • Real functional pockets are another tell-tale sign of better quality garments.

  • Fully lined in pure silk from Britex Fabrics. You will find the hyperlink in the above text.
  • Any quality garment will be completely lined, as those are the tell-tale signs for the better work.
  • The cheaper brands will use a synthetic lining, partial lining or no lining at all.

This is my antique gold lapel watch with initial M on its pin.
Photos are taken on Sunday, January 29, after Church... with a headache as those were the days we were still unsure about my brother Harry's condition. He has been doing better and the fever, that came with his pneumonia after the double surgery, got knocked down. I only rely on information from a far distance and I stopped my daily calling.
All your thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated!

{Did I loose my strength?... Like in Samson and Delilah?}

Often I wonder if I might have lost my strength when I had my LONG braid cut off at once... You certainly know the biblical story of Samson and Delilah, where she cut off his long hair, which made him loose his strength. After having worked and lived in Indonesia I wanted to have short hair and get rid of the 'weight' of that long braid. For hygiene reasons I did wear it like that, pulling all hair back and tied together. But the weight of such a long braid is not really that much as hair is very light. It was more the idea.
Here she is... in a shadow box framed on French graduating ombré silk velvet from Britex Fabrics in San Francisco. The framing was done by Irok Gallery as usual.
Thick braid...
Quite a length!
Peet Kleeven from Happy Hair chopped it off like that...
Off came my long hair and gone was my strength...?
Irok Gallery did a remarkable job with the shadow box!
I've made a blouse from the remaining French ombré silk as I had to buy it by the panel.
My Dad did snip off one of my hair locks when I was 3 months of age... My color did not change since than.
Do you have some baby locks saved? Or a braid?
Saving for that braid...
Getting there slowly. This is all in Indonesia. Wearing here a Kashmir dress that a friend did bring me from India.
Long Kashmir dress, hand embroidered in a royal blue.
Only during weekends I could let my hair down...
Hair reaching my hips...
This is it...
Minus braid... It sure felt light!
This is in Horst at my parents' in their sun-room.
So do you believe that I might have lost my strength too?
