Did not have the time to put this together sooner, but now I will.
The garden is calling and there are lots of things to do, so writing has to wait.
For our dear friends John & Becky I did make a Risotto with Porcini and other mushrooms. Also made a favorite Asparagus gratin that I found in one of those great cookbooks at TJ Maxx. In the UK it would be TK Maxx. It is a great store to just check out if you happen to be near one. Often I found a special cookbook for my friend Lady Chef Maria Runggaldier from Ristorante da Maria. She barely gets out of her kitchen so I love to look out for her!
Okay, back to the Risotto... Becky loves it and I was in the mood for it so we invited them to come after work for a family style supper, nothing fancy. Just Risotto; Asparagus Gratin with organic chicken breasts from Trader Joe's in Atlanta. WISH we had one down here...!
For dessert I simply used the delicious cream puffs from Costco; they are just super!
Using also my French Christofle Silver Knife Rests...
From Becky I once received these great blue placemats with napkins so I used them for our casual supper. They do blend nicely with the blue plates from Société Céramique Maestricht, in the Boerenhoeve pattern. Of course Boerenhoeve is Dutch for Farmstead and this is transferware from the 1930s—we inherited that from Pieter's Mom.
My sister Diny, did find me a few missing pieces at an antique shop in Limburg, in order to make it usable for a breakfast setting for four or as dessert set. This also was produced in red.

Hmmmmm! Dearest Mariette, your table looks so inviting - and your menu sounds great: I'm coming!!! :o)
ReplyDeleteYou said you had no time and garden is calling - that's true, lots of things to do - and I hear the garden-call, too!
So I've to hurry up, sweetheart!
Big hugs, Traude
Liebe Mariette,
Dear Mariette!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a magnificent table setting! Always impresses me when I see pictures like these - I would not have enough of one service or table linen to make it look like that - my china/linene is all very hickelty -pickelty.....! OH - and Risotto, LOVE it, one of my absolute favourites and one of THE best comfort foods!!!!! YUM!
I have been meaning to comment on your husband's post, but was not sure if that was appropriate (with me being German), however, I did want to say how lovely of him to take the time - I have to 'force' Mike to look at my blog 'Full of flowers' he says "Bit boring" ;)- to write and I have read his post with very mixed feelings - it was very interesting, very well put and very sad - thank you for sharing it with all of us and it is fantastic to know, that you have found what sounds like the perfect home!
I have never felt particularly proud to be German - how could one with such an awful history - and have now live outside Germany longer than I lived there....When I was 15, I visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam with my mum and after a while I remember her whispering to me to stop talking... I guess it is something, that will never go away and in a sort of way that is 'good', so that it will never be forgotten (if that makes sense). My mum, who was born in 1940, has good memories of the Americans too (she lived opposite an American base in Hamburg) - she was very lucky though, all her stories involved chocolate.....;)! Sorry, gone a bit gloomy...
I was also very interested to learn that you have live in the Venice area - how wonderful!!! It was one of those places I had presumed was totally overreated...but when I got there , I was blowen away and LOVED it!!! What made you leave?
Anyway, I wish you a wonderful Memorial weekend!!!
With love
Nicola

Hoi Mariette,
Lieve groet, Madelief
