{Our Hippeastrum Fragrantissimum 2013}

Our fragrant Hippeastrum Fragrantissimum was blooming on August 1, in Our Garden, here in Georgia/USA
Here I have cut off one stem with no less than 8 flowers. Some were still buds but nevertheless!
Looking perfect in this tall Baccarat crystal vase.
  • They are of the Amaryllidaceae familly. There are supposed to be varieties that originated in South America and also in South Africa.
  • The link South Africa and Indonesia is a very logic one, since both countries belonged to The Kingdom of The Netherlands.
  • Lots of Javanese people were brought to South Africa from Indonesia, to cultivate the fields as they were very adept and natural gardeners.
  • With that, of course plants and bulbs have gone back and forth as well. Enjoy our Indonesian species of fragrant white Hippeastrum Fragrantissimum:
A very green lawn we have this year due to all the heavy rains.
The sky is again looking pregnant with rain here...
There was no way to make any decent photos inside the home so I used this table on the patio outside our Rose Suite.
The second link below this post will tell you more about how we got this Hippeastrum Fragrantissimum from Indonesia, where we worked and lived.
We are sure glad we did bring a bulb from our Indonesian garden home with us!
They are such a reward each year.
Highly fragrant too!
Here they are, in their big planter in front of our greenhouse. Under the left blossom you see the steps of our gazebo...
This photo is from August 18, when other blossoms had opened up.
A very happy and healthy plant and we're so glad for having something from the country where we used to work and live...

  1. We grow them here in Australia as well. My favorite is the white one. You are lucky you could bring it in from overseas. We are not allowed to bring in any plant material here from overseas.

Oh, I bet you have those in Australia. This is so beautiful and highly fragrant. Well, we were daring from bringing home this one, clean bulb and getting it to grow. We had it in our planter box on our patio at the house in Indonesia.
      Hugs to you,

Hope yours is also the fragrant variety. They are such exotic beauties! Glad you found out now about its Latin botanical name.
Thank you for liking that Baccarat 'vase'. It might have been a kind of a decanter but I bought it on eBay for the purpose as a special vase. It works well that way!
Oh, we had such a lovely summer week; unreal as we were not used to sunshine without rain!

This is indeed a very rare and beautiful, heavily fragrant member of the Amaryllidaceae familly. We are lucky that we can keep them alive outside and they bloom so rewarding! Each year it is a feast when they bloom again, so I love to share them here.
      Hugs and love to you,

Yeah, we broke the law on this bulb... but we're proud of it and we did wash off all soil as both of us are very familiar with diseases that can be transmitted. Yes, we are drying out! We had a lovely full week of sunshine, low humidity and some wind. Perfect ingredients for drying out.

Thank you but knowing that both of us are the son and daughter of a market gardener and that we always worked in horticulture explains that. We both LOVE gardening the botanical way and having such interest comes naturally with the botanical name and full info.
But the Hippeastrum Fragrantissimum is not a lily; they are a member of the Amaryllidaceae familly (Amaryllis).
      Enjoy your Sunday!

  13. Good Afternoon Mariette, This is such a beautiful plant and I hoped it would be fragrant and so of course I was so pleased when you said that it was.
It must have been very interesting living in Indonesia and so lovely to bring a little part back with you.
Gosh, you sound as if you have had a dreadful summer in your part of America. I thought normally you had quite hot, humid summers.
Living in England, as you know, we always have a lot of rain and the bonus is, lush green lawns, and I can see how lush yours lawn is.
It is lovely to catch up with you.
    Best Wishes

Glad you liked our fragrant exotic from the tropics! It was worth it for sneaking in one bulb from our former garden in Indonesia. Glad it survived and multiplied over the years.
Oh, England has the prettiest gardens, due to it moderate climate with plenty of rain. But your rain is by far not as much as we get and here it is only for a couple of hours, not for days having a nice drizzle... Yes, we had a dreadful summer with way too much rain. But now it is lovely and we finally can dry out.
Enjoy your first week of September!
