On Wednesday, June 5, we had to leave our luxurious Párisi Udvar Hotel Budapest (Hyatt) for being transported by bus to our Viking Lif long boat.
We got welcomed with a delicious lunch and got settled into our cabin.
The Viking Lif remained in Budapest until after dinner, when we started to move out...
Seen here is the Elisabeth Bridge, named after the beloved Austrian-Hungarian queen and empress 'Sissi'

There are 60 pairs of shoes in cast iron, different styles and sizes. To show that nobody was safe - not even women or children! The plaque that reads: "To the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-45". Erected on April 16, 2005.

Oh I love the view in the evening with all those lights reflecting on water.
ReplyDeleteThose memorials are beautiful and important.
Have a wonderful day, Mariette, and happy 4th of July!
Dearest Tamago,
DeleteYes, the evening view on the Danube was mesmerizing and indeed those Holocaust Memorials were very well done.
For the sake of preserving history and learning from it, the memorials are very important!
Hugs,
Mariette
Hello Mariette, The shoe memorial was quite moving--I had to look up the event, which I had not known about; WWII contained so many horrors that it is hard to know them all.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, the Liberty Bridge is quite unusual and attractive--it seems to incorporate Gothic and Art Nouveau elements into its structure.
--Jim
Dearest Jim,
DeleteYou are so right it is quite shocking for discovering one more WWII horror.
This monument got only erected in 2005 but it is good for keeping that part of history alive, and may we all learn from it!
Yes, Liberty Bridge is like so many other structures in Budapest a combination of Gothic with Art Nouveau and makes the entire city so special.
Hugs,
Mariette
Hi Mariette! Beautiful evening view. Hope you both are healthy.
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteThank you it was a spectacular evening view and lucky we had perfectly clear weather too.
Yes, Pieter is already ahead of me with shedding his acute bronchitis and I'm trailing behind him.
Hugs,
Mariette
Wat een mooie en vooral originele oorlogsmonumenten ...
ReplyDeleteBeste Marian,
DeleteJazeker, je kunt enkel bewondering hebben voor zulke artiesten met veel inzicht en diepgang om het zo passend uit te kunnen beelden. Het ráákt je gewoon.
Liefs,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette; Oh, Beautiful Evening scenery of Elisabeth Bridge☆☆☆ The Shoes to the memory of the victims kind of touched my mind! After a bit of rainy days, having hot days :-)
ReplyDeleteWishing you two Happy and Healthy July.
Sending Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*
Dearest Miyako,
DeleteThe Elisabeth Bridge stood out with her beauty in the evening withe those lights.
Guess the artist who did the Holocaust Shoe Memorial ment it to be very touching... it IS!
Lucky that you got some rain at least. But yes, we are in the middle of summer with all its heat.
Hugs,
Mariette

I too am thinking of you daily regarding the passing of your father. I am so grateful that you were able to be there with him before he passed. I read your comment about you and your girl Anita watching your Dad's cremation ceremony. Sending much love and many hugs straight out to you. XXXXX
ReplyDeleteDearest Katie Isabella,
DeleteYes, the timing has been perfect and probably guided from my older Angel sister and Mom from heaven...
Anita has always been a great support to her Mama at times of sorrow.
Hugs,
Mariette
Oh, this Shoes on the Danube memorial!!How touching!!!!
ReplyDeleteAll set to start the cruise with you, dear friend!!
Dearest Marie-Anne,
DeleteYes, it is heart tugging to learn that Hungary had close to 600,000 Jewish Holocaust victims and that they actually shot women and children that fell backwards into the ice-cold Danube River.
The monument got erected only 14 years ago this April but it is very appropriate and people have to learn more about the true facts. Not rewriting history; we owe it to those murdered that have no longer a voice...
Glad you enjoy this journey into a fascinating culture, we came as close to Greece as we ever did!
Hugs,
Mariette
