On day 4 of this Viking River Cruise we still remained in Hungary and went to Kalocsa where we got onto a bus for making a walk towards Kalocsa's Baroque Cathedral
Such a beautiful Baroque Cathedral!
It is called the Assumption Cathedral.
It is called the Assumption Cathedral.
Looking back from the shore at our docking station where we disembarked our Viking Lif...
A pleasant walk and we enjoyed the irrigation canals for this very fertile region.
Kalocsa is also called the Paprika Capitol of the World!
So we enter this jewel of a Baroque Cathedral...
Admiring so many almost heavenly pieces...
Also this pipe organ where Franz Liszt, the great Hungarian composer once played himself!
It is built by József Angster, a Hungarian organ making master from Pécs.

We were fortunate for getting a very nice organ performance.

You can listen to such same organ music played here as the Grand Organ plays Fugue.
Heavenly Angels...
Such a feast for the eyes while the ears enjoyed the organ concert!
After the Organ Music we walked outside and as you can see, still a lot of renovation is going on.
The Bishop's Palace which was next door was not suitable for photographing right now, it had scaffolding around so in coming years, tourists will be able to get more out of this stop!
Our bus continued with us deeper into the Puszta area.
Clouds hanging but we had no rain!
We ended here in the Bakod Puszta...
HORSE SHOWS
Horse-riding show in Bakodpuszta on my Pinterest for viewing it.
Indeed, oxen, donkey and horses...
There also is a clarinet player to the left!
BAKODPUSZTA in Hungary - Clarinet player see my Pinterest with link.
Showing us all the levels of transport from the poor, like the yoke of oxen, to the more affluent...
Even a cute donkey was included!
The cracking of the whip did not bother those horses!
Here comes a guy with 10 horses!
He is standing on the last 2 and there are 4 in the 2nd and 4 in the 1st row...
Transport for the more affluent...
They were all riding in circles so I did not have them constantly before my lens... here comes the guy standing on the 3rd row of 2 horses with 2 rows of 4 horses each in front!
Called: the Puszta ten-in-hand...
A short iPhone video is showing you the horseman with his 10 horses, standing on the last 2.
We were allowed to roam around freely after the show was over.
Also entering the stables and here husband Pieter is petting these two for a job well done!
Back on the Viking Lif, Pieter took this photo of all the cable work and hydraulics for the retractable Captain's Wheelhouse, lowering it when having to pass below certain bridges!
Video of 1.5 min: Lowering the deck on Viking River Cruises Freya to prepare for low bridges just click link.
Clever minds that work this all out.
Standing on the deck around 18:30 and on the Danube at Draž, in Croatia already...
That evening for dinner I wore my Hungarian blouse from Szentendre that I bought at my previous trip, see link below post.
Relive video of Kalocsa visit followed by the Puszta and then the Viking Lif reaching Vukovar, Croatia before the end of the day...
When there was NO SIGNAL the line got connected straight to the point where the Relive App picked up the signal again... Funny, as it goes over-land at times!

Hello Mariette, That is a beautiful cathedral, and the inside looks so fresh with all that white and gold. I was impressed that you were in the Paprika Capital--in our family we go through a lot of paprika, imported from Hungary, of course! I hope you were able to bring some back from the source.
ReplyDelete--Jim
Dearest Jim,
DeleteIt sure is a beautiful cathedral and the organ sounded heavenly.
Yes, we were in the Paprika Capital but nowhere did we have the chance of buying anything...
Hugs,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
ReplyDeleteherzlichen Dank und sonnige Grüße
Elisabeth
Liebe Elisabeth,
Abbracci,
Mariette
A fun bull wagon.
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteYes, it was nice to see how people lived in the country...
Hugs,
Mariette
The cathedral is beautiful and I am sure you enjoyed the equestrian event!
ReplyDeleteDearest Janey,
DeleteThe cathedral no doubt was the highlight and we enjoyed the equestrian event.
Not as feisty as the one we got to see on our 2nd trip as they had a far better total arrangement with lunch and a tour on a wagon afterward.
Hugs,
Mariette
Liefs,
Mariette
Nice pictures I like the horses. Hugs Nina
ReplyDeleteDearest Nina,
DeleteThank you and we too liked the horses, they were so tame and returned by themselves to the stables!
Hugs,
Mariette
It must have been a very pleasant walk around the irrigation canals. Looks very fertile indeed! I'm amazed with all the detail in the cathedral. How special you got to see the pipe organ which Liszt played! Among composers in Baroque era, I like Pachelbel :-)
ReplyDeleteThe horses are beautiful and the donkey is adorable! Those two horses look proud getting patting from your husband Pieter :-)
Thank you for sharing your experience, Mariette. Have a wonderful new week!
Dearest Tamago,
DeleteYes, that was a pleasant walk and it was not too hot either. Fertile soil indeed, close to the river always!
That cathedral is quite something... Seeing and hearing the very pipe organ where Franz Liszt played was great.
Hah, we have the very same taste as we too have CD's from Pachelbel and it is soothing and comforting music.
Cute donkey, even though I felt a bit sorry for him/her as its rider looked rather heavy...
Can you imagine, those horses came inside, walking by themselves and they are very tame and don't freak out from strangers.
More posts to come...
Hugs,
Mariette
DeleteOh, it sure was a jewel of a cathedral, exterior and even more so the interior.
Like in Cordoba, such are dreams in architecture!
The horse show (+ donkey) is very good.
Hugs,
Mariette
Dear Mariette - The Baroque Cathedral at Kalocsa is a splendid affair. Inside it is indeed a feast for the eyes, and looks as if it is both beautifully cared for and well maintained.
ReplyDeleteAt the Bakod Puszta Horse Show it must have felt as if you were being introduced to a part of Hungary's past history.
Paprika is something that is always have in my spice cupboard.
Dearest Rosemary,
DeleteYes, this Baroque Cathedral looks very much loved throughout the ages.
Keeping in mind that this was still in Hungary and there the upkeep and if needed, restoration of ancient buildings is way ahead of the other countries where we went.
The Puszta Horse show did drag you back way in time indeed!
We too use the hot Hungarian Paprika generously and always will.
Hugs,
Mariette
Querida Mariette
Mariette
Beautiful baroque cathedral. Your Hungarian blouse is very pretty Mariette.
ReplyDeleteDearest Sami,
DeleteIndeed a beautiful baroque cathedral and the organ music was lovely as well.
Thank you for your compliment.
Hugs,
Mariette
That was a beautiful cathedral, and you were lucky you could listen to the organ playing during your visit, dear Mariette!
ReplyDeleteAs for the horse show, it must be spectacular! You look lovely with your hungarian blouse!
Many hugs!
Marie-Anne
Dearest Marie-Anne,
DeleteOh, that cathedral on the inside was almost heavenly; so much human talent combined to make it look like a dream.
The organ concert was part of our excursion for that day, it was included by Viking.
We enjoyed the horse show and thanks for your compliment about the blouse.
Hugs,
Mariette
