On Friday, September 3, 1993 we went shopping at the QVB after having checked in at the Hilton Sydney, see post below.
Both of us instantly fell in love with the cute GUMNUTS at one of the stores.
So this cute book about Ten Little Gumnuts by author illustrator May Gibbs, came home with us!
Special wrapping paper with GUMNUTS
Author May Gibbs did a lot of good:

We further purchased:
Sam Vole and his Brothers by Martin Waddell and Barbara Firth
Don't think the ones residing in our yard were/are THAT CUTE!
They ATE our tulip bulbs and more...!!!
These are not MOLES but VOLES!
Loved that there were even Mushrooms on the back of its cover... showing that they loved our profession!
Sam Vole wants to go voling all by himself. But wherever he goes, his brothers, Arthur and Henry go too!
Makes for Sweet Story Telling for some Sweet Kids!!!

No kids at home and no more teaching, but I still keep around children's books that are meaningful. Love illustrations found in older books.
ReplyDeleteDearest Tammy,
DeleteThese were too cute for not purchasing and bringing home.
They found a special kid now and no doubt will be enjoyed a lot.
May Gibbs was a brilliant writer and illustrator!
Hugs,
Mariette
Hello Mariette, Sometimes I see cute children's books but at present there are no little kids to give them to. I do know some in Taiwan, but they cannot read English, and I am not sure of their reading level in Chinese.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to know that the talented illustrator May Gibbs used her profits from her illustrations for children to support children's well-being.
--Jim
Dearest Jim,
DeleteYes, we too had always the dilemma of bridging several continents and that comes with a language barrier, especially at such a young age.
May Gibbs was very talented and she possessed a big heart, that too did capture our attention and urged us to support her in her noble efforts.
Hugs,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
ReplyDeleteich freue mich über deinen schönen Post.
Alles Liebe
Elisabeth
Liebe Elisabeth,
DeleteDas ist gut und diese Frau hatte ein großes Herz und war sehr talentiert.
Liebe Grüße,
Mariette
So many children's books have wonderful illustrations. Sometimes I'm tempted to buy some just for myself, for the artwork. :-)
ReplyDeleteIn this case, it's lovely that the author donated most of her estate to a worthy cause; rather makes having the book extra-special, I think.
Take care, have a lovely week.
Dearest Kim,
DeleteNot only wonderful illustrations but doing so by using something that naturally is growing within Australia.
Later, with more light in the days for good photos I will show more...
Yes, May Gibbs did a lot of good for a very noble cause!
No doubt a young child is enjoying this special book right now and for time to come by reading it herself.
Hugs,
Mariette
The gumnuts books are very cute, I've seen a few in the bookshops. We used to have a cute statue of 2 gumnuts kids in one of the city's parks.
ReplyDeleteDearest Sami,
DeleteWhen you did that post in June of 2018 I could not find these books quick enough in our extensive library here at home... But I never will forget the impact that May Gibbs made on both of us.
Those gumnuts are so very special! Will do another post on a real one...
Hugs,
Mariette
How awesome books!
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteYes, May Gibbs sure was an awesome author and illustrator and so were Martin Waddell and Barbara Firth!
Hugs,
Mariette
They look like really cute books. I especially love the adorable voles and mushrooms :-) Illustration for many children’s books are very detailed and lovely. As a child, I had a favorite book about chicken mom and her chicks making cake. I wish I kept it. It was a really cute book :-)
ReplyDeleteDearest Tamago,
DeleteOh, some authors and illustrators have that special gift for creating such lovely detailed and educative books for children that will never be forgotten!
Hugs,
Mariette
Such great books and such good memories
ReplyDeleteDearest Jo-Anne,

ReplyDeleteBeste Willy,
DeleteJa, heel erg geinig gedaan en wij waren ook meteen verknocht.
Leuk voor kleine kinderen om te lezen en plaatjes te kijken en ook om voorgelezen te krijgen.
Liefs,
Mariette
Oh, May Gibbs' gumnuts are so adorable!
ReplyDeleteDearest Evi,
DeleteYes, they truly are adorable and kids will learn from them too!
