Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Commercial Mushroom Cultivation Education. Bought at the QVC in Sydney Australia, more Gumnut Stories

On September 3, 1993 we did spot these books with more GUMNUT children's classics by writer May Gibbs and others.
This was at the Banquet, the day before... see link below From Hong Kong to Sydney, Australia
Pieter being very happy after doing that day a summary of the AMGA/ISMS International Workshop and Seminar and that went very well; great applaus from the audience.
Pieter also was a speaker.
These two books, inside a hard case, were traveling home with us... We enjoyed this relaxed shopping experience after all the business was taken care of.
Lovely kitties on the back of each book...
Visions of Fantasy for Volume One and Through the Magic Door for Volume Two
LOVE these GUMNUTS by May Gibbs!
A darling GUMNUT bookmark as a gift!
Other side of the cute GUMNUT bookmark...
To the right inside the 'mushroom shaped' drawing it reads:
Humans
Please be kind to all
Bush Creatures
and don't pull flowers up by the roots
~
Those were heavy books, but we never shied away from carrying our load when traveling.
Of course, those were the years before the Maximum Baggage Weight...!
~
Soon these will be read to some favorite little girls that we LOVE!

  1. Hello! After reading the account of that harrowing experience, I have no excuses whatsoever for fearing that drop into the creek! My little girl imagination. Your Pieter looks quite dapper in this photo.

    1. Dearest Helen,
Oh, how I wish we had had iPhones back in those days. People often would not believe it. A good test for fears, which I luckily never had. For you it must have been frightening and sure enough the slippery mountain made a huge difference too!
Pieter was feeling so happy and relaxed after his presentation and doing the summary of the International Workshop and Seminar. Glad I captured the moment...

  3. Hello Mariette, Those little creatures were all the rage for a while. In America we had Brownies and Kewpies and Billikens, and I'm sure many more, but it is nice to see Australia's special creations. I am sure the little girls that you know will delight in these stories.

    1. Dearest Jim,
What a great history lesson in children's books you give us here! Thanks for mentioning all those, as of course having grown up in The Netherlands, we did not have those or even know them. The Brownies Book were no doubt educative for all. The Kewpies are like a cousin of the Australian Gumnuts. Billiken comes the closest to the Dutch children's books. However there also existed a book called 'In Zwartjes land'. Zwartje is a diminutive for black.
Yes, those little girls will grow up knowing about Australian Gumnuts and others and learn to love them. Reading is such an important thing for any child!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    1. Dearest Martha Jane,
That is no surprise since you either had to be living in Australia or work and/or visit there frequently for knowing. Both of us always loved books and thus we ended up in a Sydney book store and fell in love with these. Who would not?!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

No, those were the children's books my cousins in Australia grew up with and when we went there for work or for lecturing, we fell in love with them at the huge book store in Sydney. They sure are enchanting!
      Hugs,

  6. Hello Mariette,
Such sweet books. The pictures are darling and would be nice to make a copy and frame for a little girls room. Handsome photo of Pieter. Happy Thursday to you and finally sunshine here and warmer.

Yes, they are very sweet and it would make a great print for framing for a child's room!
Thank you about the compliment for Pieter, he felt just 'relaxed' and that makes all the difference for each of us as it is reflected in our expression.
Glad you are getting a break from winter.

A pity as these are such lovely stories with the cutest illustration.

  12. The QV building is one of my favourite when we visit Sydney, such a grand old building. May Gibbs is certainly an Australian favourite Mariette, I bought one of my young great nieces aged 3 a Gumnut fairy costume to take back to Canada, she looked adorable in it 🌿
