Skiing makes for a very happy Pieter!
We did not travel with ski gear of course... but it worked well.
My very first time cross country skiing on April 26, 1984 and of course falling – but laughing!
Pieter of course knew...
We're having a great time together!
Team Vedder is now better synchronized...
Friend Max and photographer...
Had to close my jeans jacket as we went higher up the mountain...
Friend Max made great photos of this event!
Hans Jörg did bring them to our home on September 19,1984 when he stayed with us for 3 nights.
Precious gift and a valuable memory of great times with Barbara and Max!
Barbara and me as we are more in the wooded and shaded area.
We even heard an avalanche from a distance!
Pieter looking back
We really enjoyed our time together!
They let Pieter drive back home in their Volvo wagon due to Pieter getting easy car sick in the mountains.
We all changed for a formal dinner with the entire family.
Jörg Kuhn himself was still at a meeting but he joined us later at the restaurant where his wife Leny, daughters Marianne and Barbara and Max, husband from Barbara and son Hans Jörg and also the manager from their mushroom farm August Enzler and his wife had come together.
We started out with a regional specialty of Bündnerfleisch with melon.
A thinly sliced dried beef from Graubünden, Switzerland.
At home we did toast on both Barbara's upcoming Birthday, followed by Pieter's.
Pieter got presented a parcel that contained the above Swiss Rado DiaStar watch!
He'd shown it to Hans Jörg when he visited us for dinner in Dublin, Georgia/USA, on January 22, 1984.
Seen in a magazine and Pieter uttered the words: 'If I ever have money, that will be my watch!'
Having just moved into our home with a 15–year 12.5% mortgage, that of course was not possible...
Now, Jörg Kuhn senior presented it to Pieter with the words: 'Here, you have never asked for anything when driving down to Switzerland, from The Netherlands, for solving mushroom related problems, all those years...!'
Pieter was overwhelmed and shy as a little boy but of course oh so happy with such a regal gift from his mushroom friends!
Pieter still wears it with pride.
Stay tuned for more...

ReplyDeleteQuerido J.P.,
DeleteGracias y un abrazo,
Mariette
Wonderful times, although very cold I would guess.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Dearest Victor,
DeleteYes, wonderful indeed and not cold at all!
Did you not see we had our jackets open and Max even without?
Only in the shaded area it was somewhat colder.
Hugs,
Mariette
Wow! What a surprise that watch must have been, Mariette, but Pieter certainly deserved it. I've never been skiing at all, but cross-country looks like something I could handle.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Dearest Martha Jane,
DeleteOh, that was really the BEST surprise ever and Pieter was oh so overwhelmed and shy.
Yes, the cross-country skiing was very pleasant to do.
Hugs,
Mariette
Hello Mariette, You are quite stylish and adventuresome in those ski togs! The watch was a magnificent present, especially because of the several personal meanings connected with it. You say Pieter still wears the watch--is the crystal really as scratch-proof as the ad claims?
ReplyDelete--Jim
Dearest Jim,
DeleteWell, this came unexpected so both of us did not pack anything for this event! It worked out fine.
Oh that watch looks as new as it did when being presented to Pieter, it sure IS scratch-proof, as is my Rado Coupole that I got in Singapore on November 17, 1989.
Only inconvenience is that we need to go far for a reputable watchmaker to renew the battery every couple of years.
Hugs,
Mariette
It must have been very warm, Mariette, you both were dressed so lightly! I do like cross-country skiing, though I haven't done it in decades. Fantastic exercise, and when you get into the rhythm, it's like magic, sailing over the snow. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's quite the watch, btw!
Dearest Kim,
DeleteAs I replied to Jim here above, we both were not prepared for being out in the snow and did not pack for it. But the weather was so mild and pleasant!
Loved it too and like you describe it, once you got into the rhythm you just glide over the snow and fast too! Oh, both of us love the Rado watches!
Hugs,
Mariette
Funny pictures dear Mariette :-)
ReplyDeleteBest regards
Bernhard
Dearest Bernhard,
DeleteFun we sure had!
Hugs,
Mariette
Oh that looks like so much fun Mariette, you were both enjoying it so much. It doesn't look like this will be our year to get to the snow after all, perhaps next year ✨
ReplyDeleteDearest Grace,
DeleteWe thoroughly enjoyed that and being in nature!
Hoping that soon the world will be free and open again so people can enjoy their outdoor events.
Hugs,
Mariette
Was it nice to ski? Fun to see how skis, ski boots and poles have changed over the years.
ReplyDeleteDearest Anne,
DeleteYes, the cross country skiing was great fun; have never done the real thing. Pieter did for years.
Sure, since 1984 most things have changed; we too!
Hugs,
Mariette
I never learned to ski. You both looks so happy and love seeing the big smiles.
ReplyDeleteDearest Betsy,
DeleteThat's what being together with wonderful friends does for you; pure happiness.
Also for being able to ski together with Pieter!
Hugs,
Mariette
I have neverlearnt to Ski, just saying
ReplyDeleteI liked this post
Dearest Jo-Anne,
DeleteA lot of people never have and I only managed the cross-country skiing.
Glad you liked this.
Hugs,
Mariette
I have tried cross country once and did okay but my husband loves the sport. Cute pictures...and what a nice and probably well deserved gift.
ReplyDeleteDearest Janey,
DeleteFor me also only two events where I enjoyed it and Pieter loved the real skiing!
Thank you and yes, that was quite a gift and knowing Pieter, he sure deserved it.
Hugs,
Mariette
Mariette e Peter siete molto carini.
ReplyDeleteCara Olga,
DeleteGrazie per le tue gentili parole!
Abbracci,
Mariette
Nunca he esquiado.
Abrazos,
Mariette
Big Hugs
ReplyDeleteDearest Travis,
DeleteThank you!
