When driving to work in East Java, we came across this stream where women were doing their laundry...
On Monday morning, November 4, 1996 on our way up into the mountains of East Java, Indonesia to the mushroom farm...
We spotted these women in a stream, doing their laundry!
Usually they're hitting the wet garment on a rock and kneed and rinse, whatever it takes.
A tedious procedure!
It certainly does make one aware how privileged we all are with our WASHING MACHINES!

Is that you by the stream?
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Dearest Victor,
DeleteNo, I'm a lot more fortunate!
Pieter took the photo while with our driver crossing the bridge over this stream. We were on our way to work...

Hello Mariette, I would be utterly lost without my washer and dryer. We have some rivers here in Taipei, but they are so polluted that if I washed my clothes in them they would get dirtier instead of cleaner!

Dearest Jim,
DeleteOh yes and that was one thing I 'demanded' for having while living and working in Indonesia those three years. We bought it in Jakarta, imported from Germany and it got transported and connected. Lots of those rivers are also rather muddy and brown and no doubt polluted in most areas. East Java was by far not as heavily populated. Got my original text back by now; it got removed... for strange reasons!
Hugs,
Mariette
We enjoy so many luxuries here in the States, Mariette. May we ever be mindful of how much we are blessed!
ReplyDeleteDearest Martha Jane,
DeleteYes, we enjoy sometimes too many luxuries that makes people even less grateful, especially children.
Finally got my original text back, they gave it back to me as a draft so I altered this. Crazy behaviour!
Hugs,
Mariette
I agree with your reply, above, that too many luxuries (can) make people even less grateful. I would not want to live without modern household conveniences, though, and since I've never had to beat my clothes against rocks in a stream, by default I take my washer for granted.
ReplyDeleteDearest Kim,
DeleteThank you and if anything we learned from living and working in poor areas, is to be grateful for what we got. We have absolutely no reason to ever complain! No, it would be impossible for us to go back to such primitive ways.
Hugs,
Mariette
Abrazos,
Mariette
Laundry isneverending
ReplyDeleteDearest Jo-Anne,
DeleteYes, you're so right about that; a never-ending chore and so much harder for those without a washing machine.
Hugs,
Mariette
Oh yes indeed we are lucky Mariette, thank heavens we don't have to do this, although I think this method still occurs in remote areas.
ReplyDeleteDearest Grace,
DeleteYes, no doubt for several women this is still the case and we ought to keep that in mind when doing our weekly 'chores'. That makes doing the job by machine a privilege!
Hugs,
Mariette
Other times, I hope that these days they already have a washing machine :)

Dearest Christina,
DeleteWell, one would certainly wish but I doubt that will be reality...
