Salem, VA + General Lee's Restaurant in Gettysburg, PA

No, we did not always work...
Here we are on our way to Pennsylvania, and our first stop is in the Appalachian Mountains in Salem, Virginia after driving some 433 mi or 697 km.

Onward we went to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania to the Civil War Battlefield and General Lee's Headquarters.
Next door was the General Lee's Family Restaurant.
Now 707 mi or 1138 km away from home.
This was on November 6, 1994

To be continued...

  4. Hello Mariette, I have heard from people who have visited Gettysburg that it is a moving experience. I just finished reading the book Salammbo, about the Siege of Carthage in ancient times. All war is terrible!

    1. Dearest Jim,
Indeed, all wars are terrible and only 8 miles (13 km) from where I'm born was a big German military cemetery. We visited that also with our American friends. It is such a chilling experience to read on the marker that a sixteen year boy got killed the day before WWII ended...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. I've never been to Gettysburg, but would certainly love to visit one day. We do have the Kennesaw National Battlefield practically in our backyard, so of course, I've been there many times.
    Blessings, Mariette!

    1. Dearest Martha Jane,
We above all enjoyed driving through the Appalachian Mountains.
True, you're right near one of the Nation's battlefields.

  6. I've covered a lot of beautiful Virginia having lived nearby in D.C., and also Maryland, in the 60's, and of course still close by VA now here in NC. Remember visiting Gettysburg a couple of times, and of course PA often when my late MIL and SIL lived in that state.
Enjoy your vintage videos always - thanks for sharing Mariette.
Have a wonderful October weekend - Mary

    1. Dearest Mary,
You indeed are close by to this beautiful part of the USA!
Indeed, we now can label them 'vintage' and so do we ourselves; as good wine... 😉

  7. My mother and her second husband lived in Salem for a long time and consequently, I visited her there many times. She came from Roanoke as did all of my family, but Salem is right next to Roanoke. I did not get to visit those places you did. If I get someone to go with me, I may drive there and see them. :-)

  11. Thank you for sharing the video Mariette. We have passed this area on travels but have yet to visit here. Will have to do that soon on a trip we hope to take. We need to take the grand girls with us. The last major victory for General Lee was the battle at Cold Harbor in Hanover County Va.. Mom and Dad owned land in Cold Harbor and its where they lived when I was born and moved when I was about five. My brothers dug up quite a few bullets and a C.S. buckle among other relics. The mini balls would wash up they said in the very sandy soil in the area after a hard rain. We love History. Thank you again for sharing, Betsy
