Frost and our Patio Pots

It has been quite some years since we had such frost as this winter.
Maximum was –10°C or 14°F.
Our tropical exotics like this Clematis Armandii we long have lost to bitter winters...
In above picture was against our balcony on April 14, 1995.
That one died from frost...
Pieter had managed to save two starters.
{My Green Sewing Creation} ←click for seeing more photos with its tropical blooms.
Those were the top years for our garden!
But the trees have grown bigger and our other shrubs and plants must compete...
Also we both aged and we opted more for Pot Plants on our Patio.
Also the more hardy ones so not every fall and spring they ought to be hauled in and out of our greenhouse.
On our patio, one pot plant is this Croton Yellow Mammy.
Croton
Croton plants have beautiful patterned leaves.
Crotons are pretty!
Some other pot plants on our patio.
Soon we will see what will be left from our patio pot plants...
Looking out of the bay window we see a lot of dead plants in the garden!
Hate that dreary look but in two months things will start anew.

  1. Your plants are coming along nicely. They look wonderful on your patio. Winters are harsh here, and I'm not sure my mini roses made it through the snow and cold. We'll have to wait and see.

I hope the bright new year brings much goodness to you, Mariette.

    1. Dearest Sheri,
Our patio looks nice with its pot plants—as long as the weather behaves.
You live in a more land climate where winters are real so that is very tough for plants to survive in.
Hope for everything that surrounds is what we have to keep in mind.
May you encounter the very same of goodness!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  2. When our temperature dropped to 28 degrees we lost the poinsettia, even though it was sheltered under the roofed patio. I’m sorry about your beautiful plants. Hopefully the damage isn’t too severe.

    1. Dearest Debby,
      Each winter has its toll.
Pieter had to take the heater apart to make it work properly again inside the greenhouse.
      We will find out...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  3. Our plants are taking a beating in all this ultra-cold, too, Mariette. But I think we up in Kennesaw can take it better than those of you in south Georgia. Let's pray that this cold wave will disappear soon@
Hope you had a blessed Christmas!

    1. Dearest Martha Jane,
Yes, you for sure are better prepared living some three+ hours north of us.
No one looks forward to such weather and for several families the heating cost will be a burden this year.
My Christmas was one of survival—too sick to enjoy anything but hoping next year will be better!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  4. I hope most of your plants (roots) will have survived. Minus 10C is absolutely freezing, even when you live in winter climate as I do.

I've grown croton plants indoors, of course, but haven't had one in a long time. Yours looks gorgeous in the pics!

    1. Dearest Kim,
So do we and it is always bad if the freezing goes together with such mean and drying wind. Most plants can harden off but only gradually and without such drying wind...
Yes, such croton varieties are happy plants!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. Hi, Mariette and Pieter!
Those Croton plants are indeed beautiful! They remind me of Hawaii, althought I have never been there, they seem very tropical. :)
I bought an Asparagus Plumosus today. It's so soft and delicate and I was looking for one for a long time, but never saw them for sale.
I remember my mother had one and they were very usual in almost every house in the 80's.
Oh, and I finally found endives and bought them yesterday! As soon as I use them, I'll let you know.
Lots of hugs to you and Pieter!
PS - I sent you a Facebook message.
    :)

    1. Dearest Paula,
Such plants are no doubt the tropical varieties. We have both been to Hawaii and its trees and plants are lovely!
Oh, that is long ago since we had the Asparagus Plumosus inside our greenhouse—loved it back in Europe and still but it is too hot for it here and inside with the air condition it is not happy either.
Glad you found yourself some Belgian endive! Would love to have some myself but have none...
Did check and search for any FB message but nothing. Found you instead and sent you a message.
Big hugs to you both from both of us!

    2. Hawaii is on my list of places to go one day (Hawaii and a LOT more places). It's so beautiful!
I love plants, like I told you before and the Asparagus was one of those that I was trying to find and this morning, when Nuno and I went shopping early to beat the crowds, I found it and it was the LAST one on the stand!
So, I grabbed it and brought it home with us! :P
As soon as I cook the endives, I'll send you an email. And I saw your FB message and already responded.
I'm much better today, but yesterday I wasn't feeling very well, because I ate a lobster and shrimp rissol and I think it went bad, because I had left it out of the fridge...
      Live and learn, right?
Big hugs from us too, to you, Pieter and the whole gang!
      :)

    3. Happy for you and oh, we have to be so careful with any seafood items as well as chicken or other meats!
There are heavenly spots on this earth that is for sure and I love those with sunshine, palm trees and the more tropical vegetation—makes one happy to see always green and flowers!
Hugs back to you both and Tareco.

So do we but the drying winds is always tricky for plants to survive.
      We will see...

      Liefs,
