{March 14, Written Life Message for me by my Favorite Great-Uncle}

On March 14, 1963 my most favorite Great-Uncle and Priest, Dr. Sjang Nelissen (brother from my paternal Grandmother) or in Dutch 'Heeroom', wrote the following words for me in my (poezie) poetry album:

Lijk op de Zon,
Look like the Sun,
Straal licht en warmte uit,
Radiate light and warmth,
Altijd en overal,
Always and everywhere,
Waar ge ook zijt.
Wherever you will be.

Heeroom became a priest in 1929 and he studied Church Law in Rome. This photo shows him, to the right, in Rome.
For 4 years he had been a professor at the seminary but that asked too much of him. In 1938 he left for Indonesia where he stayed a total of 30 years, in Kupang on the island of Timor. He was a pastor, spiritual head of the seminary, leader for the regio Timor and adviser to several Bishops. He died in Manilla, Philippines, while at a conference there. Heeroom did marry my parents in 1949, while on his first leave from Indonesia. Times were tough for Priests at that time, they were not allowed to go home soon; nor often... Kind of cruel I think.
How I would have loved to speak with him, while ending up working and living in Indonesia; HIS country. But in my heart I know that he has been with me very close, always.
Heeroom on his horse in Indonesia
How I longed for his letters with beautiful stamps that I did study with a magnifier. I was so in love with Indonesia's flora and fauna. Heeroom must have lead me there...
While on his leave from Indonesia for the Second Vatican Council in Rome, Italy, he did write this message in my poetry album. He also presented me with a special gift, as a thank you for all those years that I'd written letters to him. That was a package with Second Vatican Council stamps for my collection. I have no idea where they are now... I've always lovingly passed everything on to my siblings and thus I lost them. Hope that someone is still keeping them as they were very special.

Certainly Heeroom was a male role model for me and I guess I inherited his love for languages and writing... So far, I've followed him to two countries as well: Italy where we worked and lived for one year, speaking the language and Indonesia where we lived and worked for about three years, speaking the language. Even adopting a foster daughter from his beloved country...

{My OPA - GRANDDADDY}

Today, November 3, it is 120 years ago that my OPA, paternal GRANDDADDY was born. He also was my GODFATHER. When I picked up my childhood poetry album and read his words, it made me think of him on this special day. He passed away because of a fatal stroke when I was only 14 and he 73... He was a hard working man, a plasterer (stucadoor in Dutch) and doing also ornamental and decorative interior plasterwork around ceilings and lamps. Nowadays we buy it ready made out of resin... His two brothers were also plasterers and his Dad, my Great Grandfather, did whitewash or lime wash walls for a living. Tough job and it sure didn't make them wealthy. My great-grandfather only lived to be 52 years old. But they were honest and very much Church going people that raised their large families by maintaining high morals and ethics. They were happy and content, something that is often lacking nowadays especially amongst the younger generations. The youth often throws away the religious part that their ancestors lived by for centuries. It was a culture, handed down from father to son, mother to daughter. Now people think they can 'have it all' with minimal efforts and all on their own. Often life does not unfold like that as somewhere down the road, there will be a bump and what then? Facing it all alone, without any spiritual support and believe, will be hard. Okay, let's see what message Opa wrote for me way back...
Just a short note
Not much in writing
But it's my wish,
That it may be long lived
And that it always
Reminds you
Of who wrote this:
He means so well!
Opa
Opa as a young man, wearing his border guard suit. Still having his own dreams...
The Netherlands had no military during WWI as they remained neutral; hence they only had border guards.
We have no idea where my Opa Martin Van den Munckhof, born in Horst on November 3, 1891 did serve... Maybe in Venlo?
He lived a harsh life through WWI; the Depression years; WWII and yet he managed to raise his large family of 12 children.
This is on their 25th Wedding Anniversary; 13 September 1943 during WWII...
My Dad is the one in the center, top.
Uncle Harry to the right is seen wearing his plus fours.
This was on their 40th Wedding Anniversary, 13 September 1958...
Dad is again in the center, top row.
Uncle Harry to the left, is again wearing his plus fours.
Sadly, Opa did not live till the 50th Wedding Anniversary as on February 15 of 1965, he passed away. On the birthday of his daughter, Aunt Nelly who's seated to the right.
Several of my uncles and one aunt, have followed their parents to heaven. My Grandmother passed away on November 26, 1984 at the age of 91. She was a long time friend of my husband Pieter's Mom!
Some treasures I keep from my Opa...
In the little jar is a blue stone that was once set into a little ring that I received from Opa when I was 5.
I walked home from Kindergarden and Opa met me on the road as he walked with his cane daily for exercise. He gave me this little ring and I was over the moon. Of course we had no jewelry then, nothing on my fingers, wrists or in my ears. To me it was a precious piece of jewelry and when it came apart, I still kept this little blue stone...
To the left is my very first Mass book that I received from Opa for my 1st Communion.
Going to a Catholic school, we went to Mass daily and that was marked even above our grades on our quarterly 'rapport'.
The silver charm bracelet (without any charms) was given to me when I did my Confirmation in sixth grade.
That I've kept also forever, as it is so dear to me. Sentimental value from a person that loved me and whom I loved and very much admired.
Opa went to Mass every day and he prayed for his entire family. He loved them and did visit regularly in order to keep up with everyone.
Sadly Opa never got to meet his three Australian grandchildren. When they'd boarded the ship in Adelaide, Opa had already died... sad for making the long journey over seas, to show the children to their grandparents and only one of them lived to actually see them.
My little treasures... The blue stone from the ring that I got from Opa when I was only 5.
The cross is from my Great Uncle, Heeroom, who was advisor to several bishops and living in Indonesia. Will introduce him later...
On this little 'Pochette' (pocket square), in crocheted rose filet lace, are some sentimental treasures.
Also the medallion with the Holy Mary is there, that got pinned onto my camisole as a child. Even babies had it on, for protection by the Heavenly Mother.
The blue stone has a little crack but that's fine...
By the way, the number 13, I bought in Germany and over there it is a lucky charm; Glückszahl.
Closeup...
Okay, the treasures are back in the authentic antique letterpress drawer. Pieter did put an acrylic sheet in front to keep (most) of the dust out. The little jar with the blue stone resides to the left, near the top under the small brown glass jar.
The acrylic sheet is kept in place with Swiss Clips, see top right corner how they look on the backside.
Easy to slide to the side for opening up...
Did you notice my Oma roses? Yes, they are blooming now, after the heat of summer.
Remember on August 13, the Oma mystery rose got resolved by Bea from Modern Country Lady and we now know it is the Floribunda rose: Queen Elisabeth.
Paired with some ever-blooming Rosemary they look gorgeous in a small Baccarat crystal vase!
It was perfect for this post for having Oma's roses as well. They belong together...
The blue Le Jacquard Français tea towel has served me well this week!
Guess that Opa and Oma are smiling down from heaven...

{Parcel from Greece with Regal Gift}

Well, the first day of July was a special one. Parcels arrived with some replacements of our favorite plants and a special one from Greece... Will tell about the plants later! Let's go first to Greece, to the country so rich in culture and yet with so many problems right now. In a way, they're not unique as we are heading fast into the same direction. But I'm not going to write about our economy.
This was a happy parcel from a dear new friend, a kindred spirit, who was meant to cross my path.
Things do happen for a reason; no doubt! Following Catherine's blog Corner of Cat's Mind I got to meet Joan from God's Little People and I happened to be her 100th follower. Her reply to that was: 'I would love to send you a little something from my own creative creations as a celebration of my 100th follower'... So a parcel left Greece on June 16 but got kind of stranded in Athens because of a strike... Today, the post master did ring the doorbell and asked my signature for a parcel from Greece! First I was amazed at the beautiful, large stamps. Well, I did collect stamps as a little girl and whenever my Great-Uncle 'Heeroom' send us a letter from his mission in Kupang on the Island of Timor, Indonesia, I was studying those stamps in detail. That's how you learn a lot about a given country. Greece has never been on my list of countries visited, only my brother, the author, has been there several times with his family. But now I held a parcel in my hands from over there...
The parcel got roughed up along the way...
Beautiful handwriting... this always does reveal so much about a person.
So sorry that Joan did send it via Express but due to the strike it got here after 2 weeks...
Beautiful handwriting again caught my eye... lovely way of wrapping and a meaningful card with letter inside.
I took it out on the balcony for making these photos.
Joan is such a kind lady as she is rescuing felines and giving them love and veterinarian treatment... A person with a big heart! You have to visit her blog... A reward would be to follow this extraordinary person.
She certainly did create PEACE for those lucky felines that, through her, got to know for the first time in their life LOVE and shelter.
Joan too has studied fashion for three years and she did run for 13 years her own small design company, designing bags and accessories... So this one she created for me. Beautiful silk crêpe de chine and lined in a leopard print silk.
Look at the elegant golden lobster claw and the slide buckle with rhine stones!
Ha, did she know I had an Escada hair calf skirt with leopard and tiger print?
Or that our felines dress up for formal occasions in a leopard bow-tie? Telepathy it looks like!
Unbelievable...
Look again at that lobster claw and the slide buckle.
And realizing that this poor beauty has been smashed inside a parcel for two weeks...
Once more, it made me almost speechless for the way it matches my wardrobe.
Oh and this silk Escada blouse to the right in leopard print, and the big square Escada silk scarf that can be worn as a butterfly with the ends knotted and made into sleeves... How did she possibly know all this?!
Even with a golden magnetic snap closure, just like the haute couture bags are done.
Joan, I am without words and only can say THANK YOU  ever so much for such a treasure.
The material is regal and knowing it was designed and made by you makes it priceless!
Yes, Joan... my Mami is really without words! So she lets me finish the story. I'm one of those tiny felines, that you call 'God's Little People' and my name is Tiggy-Tiger. Mami said there was in the couture world a model who's name was Twiggy... So for a feline, Tiggy would work better. I am only a mere 6 pounds but I'm very smart and as hyper as they come... I can't even keep my bow-tie straight. Constantly moving and I gave Mami a hard time to capture me on camera.
Mami told me about your Noona and I am really worried about her. I pray that soon she will feel better and finally will know some love.
Oh, and Kimmie's fate made me really get down...
All I ever had was a tiny piece bitten out of my ear; that's nothing. My own fault because I went away to see other friends because my siblings did tease and nag me. Now I stay home more often, close to Mami. She was right but you know, I was young...
Would you PLEASE give Noona a paw for me?!
I soon want to hear from Mami that she's doing better.
All felines should have the life I have; I'm purrfectly happy you know!
By for now and thanks for making my Mami happy!!!
