Very good Article in this Pandemic, I live by the rules which I learned at the Mushroom school CCO in Horst, Netherlands. It was the best school I ever visited, here it was where I learned not only about Mushrooms. But also how the environment where we live in works, including pests and diseases and how to deal with it.

Wanna thank you for the wise lesson you taught us there in Horst at the CCO. Also I can only recommend everybody to read your books. They are really great!

I have been working since 2005 in mushrooms when I was at the university, and the only one book available was yours.

Since that time starting as an entrepeneur, until now as a mushroom farm owner, it has been so helpful as an engineer in mushroom production, communication with workers, organization, etc. all your help and your wife's too.

Once upon a time I had the privilege of being taught by you to become a good mushroom grower in the late 70's and early 80's. I have been working in this world for about 25 years. First 8 years as a manager of the tunnel company and then 15 years on my own mushroom farm.

So your knowledge transfer has really helped me. I would like to thank you for that and I look back on a nice period where you taught us the trade in a skillful and humorous way.

We spoke again at the Mushroom Days in Grubbenvorst after you went to the USA.

As you say, not every farmer can invest huge capital on high–tech equipment. We need to help the farmer to have good yield with less money.

Pieter's reply:

That is so true, even nowadays and that's why I still explain the BASICS in our book! Also both of us have always done our consulting work, based on QUALITY which is market value, instead of just high yields...! A BIG mistake would be an incentive program for the managers (even consultants) based just on kilograms but not on quality, which translates into market value!

Milestone Reached

November 10, 1983...

Well, October 2023 was my worst month with October 10, being only 40 kg or 88 US pounds...

Determined to GAIN weight + strength—I've managed to add 10% to that!

40 kg... 

On November 9, best friend Ellie and family from The Netherlands sent us these lovely flowers...

On Friday November 10, we gathered with friends (23 in total, including us) around the table at Ristorante da Maria ←click link.

This was our THANK YOU for all the help, driving me, food brought, laundry done, cleaning, praying or whatever.

AND it was also the day that we had our 40th Wedding Anniversary... See first photo!

We did not tell that to our friends, but I announced it after the prayer was said by a dear friend.

So grateful!

The waiter made this photo but we FORGOT to have one of Pieter and me together...

Pieter is on the left in the back and me at the head of the table.

Lady Chef Maria prepared us a delicious 5–course dinner and each guest had selected their Entrée of choice.

Me in my wool Escada suit visiting with friends... FIRST time I wore block heels and also earrings and rings... 

Rings would still fall off one month ago!

That's my little purse on the table, had no space on chair as I still use a pillow for my back. 

Me visiting with friends in–between courses...

Pieter made those photos, including from his salmon with shrimps... We both opted for fish.

All enjoyed their dinner and we felt very blessed for being alive and having reached this milestone!

Prayers do get answered!!!

Big Doors which allow for the Head–End Filling Machine and Mechanical Emptying on a Mushroom Plant

 Last post I mentioned the Head–End Filling Machine so let us explain that a bit more to the readers.

Fig. 58.  The growing rooms at this farm are also equipped with the special made big doors that allows for the use of the head–end filling machine and also makes mechanical emptying of the rooms much easier.

These doors are at the head–end (in Dutch kopeinde) of a growing room!

Hence the word: head–end filling machine...

Some other Dutch/English examples

The work corridor includes the entire width in front of the growing rooms and is covered by the same roof. On the other side of the work corridor, there are separate rooms containing a hot water and steam boiler, water supply, cold store, washrooms, shower rooms, etc. 

For ease of transportation, etc., the work corridor should not be too narrow; the minimum width required is 4 m. In the work corridor itself, tables for weighing, hand washing basins etc. can be placed.

As in the case of walls and ceilings, the doors should be insulated properly. These doors should seal to the floor with a rubber strip, without a threshold. The doors in the back wass of the rooms should be at least 2.5 m high to facilitate the filling with slanted conveyor belts, etc.

Nowadays, however, as most shelf bed farms are using the so–called, head–end filling machine, the back doors have to be even bigger, e.g. 4.5 m wide and 3 m high. These doors hang in a special frame on rails, so that they can be lifted somewhat and then moved to the left or to the right. There are specialized companies that are making these large, insulated doors.
