Bye Bye Biking in Shorts & Lynx Rufus

Guess we have enjoyed our final 2022 months of warm and sunny weather for biking in shorts...
On October 11, it was a perfect day for getting onto our 'iron horses'...
Wearing a short sleeved top though.
Perfect sky with clouds for capturing those cows and bull with old building.
A look to the left reveals an old barn.
The new farmstead is seen in the back on the right.
Cloudy, but lovely weather on October 11, at 28°C or 82°F.
Another perfect day on October 16.
Just past the bridge, across the river.
That was the weather on October 16, at 29°C or 84°F.
October 24...
That was sunny and 22°C or 72°F.
Me standing at the very end of the bridge across the river.
Lovely blue sky!
Going back across the river, I saw this Bobcat Lynx rufus.
So sad to encounter this beauty of Georgia Wildlife!
I've placed my foot alongside for size comparison next to my size 8 sandal.
I did drag the still soft but limp body off the pavement, into the shoulder in the grass as I hate for trucks to mash up the body.
I've not looked at its head but so far no visible wounds...
Guess it ran into a car and got knocked out.
For comparison, our own Tiggy–Tiger girl at home in the driveway next to my foot.

  1. So sad about the bobcat. You had some nice weather to go cycling. I love the photo with the cattle.

    God bless.

    1. Dearest Victor,
Yes, the countryside is at times so peaceful and lovely.
Weather was perfect all through October with only a few cooler days that were windy.
Poor bobcat, seems to be a young one.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  2. What a gorgeous bike ride you had, except for that poor bobcat. I'd have bawled my eyes out. :-(

    1. Dearest Kim,
Oh sure we enjoyed our ride so much till I saw something big on the road while biking on...
It broke my heart for knowing that such a beautiful (young) animal would get totally mashed up by trucks and such. A heavy traffic road and sadly also known for speeding!
Such a soft and elegant creature...😼
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  4. Dearest Mariette,
Not anonymous, but Suzi here as blogger is refusing to let me sign in.
Suddenly, true to New England, the weather has changed. Saturday was sunny and in the high 70º F. By Sunday the temp had dropped and we had our first hard freeze that night. Now it's in the 40º's and raining......more typical weather!
    Have a great week........*suzi*

    1. Dearest Suzi,
Well, Blogger is being very tricky—over and over again. Maybe they're trying to discourage people?
We too have had a sudden drop in temperature here and those days in shorts and short sleeves are definitely over with!
Friday we will have frost at night...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. Hi, Mariette and Pieter!
It is so sad, to see such a beautiful creature killed like that... They were almost extinct here in Portugal and were being created in captivity, so they wouldn't be hunted or run over.
Thank God, a few years ago they were decreted a protected species, so they can't be hunted and can finally roam free in the wilderness!
I hope you and Pieter can still manage to squezze in some bike rides, if the sun decides to appear again! ;)
    Lots of hugs!
    :)

    1. Dearest Paula & Nuno,
Good for Portugal that they are being protected! Here, unfortunately, they are not yet protected and it is terrible to see them killed for their fur!
Oh yes, we did ride our bikes again and were not quite dressed warm enough with still short sleeves under our thin jackets. We need to get layered and wear our long–sleeved sweatshirts for full protection! The skull cap and gloves felt great though and we didn't go that far due to the cold wind.
      Hugs,
      Pieter & Mariette

    2. It's umbelievable that in the XXI century, animals are still hunted for their fur...
Here in the Iberian Penisula (Portugal and Spain), the only lynx we have is the Iberian lynx. Here are some informations about the species and what they did to preserve it, if you and Pieter want to read:

      Lots of hugs!

    3. Paula, what a lovely information with its two videos. For me it still is easy to understand Portuguese even though I can't read nor write it but with the mixture of Spanish and French, Italian.
Our Bobcat is the smallest of the world's four varieties and let's hope they all will be preserved.
What I learned from the videos is that this was probably a half year old young one. Still regret that we did not look at its face... but you're on a road and I'd put my bike on its stand so you don't want to stay there.
They are like our domesticated kittens, lifespan till about 15.5 years.
Yeah, why would one trap a bobcat if it is not for the fur? Both of us love nature and can never understand any hunting...
      Hugs,
      Pieter & Mariette

    4. I can't understand hunting either, except if it is because one needs to eat and can't aford to buy meat. Or lives in the middle of the woods, far from civilization or stores...
I hope that more and more each day, people realise how beautiful and needed these and all the wild animals are.
      Lots of hugs!
      :)

  6. It’s hard for me to look at dead animals. I just want to cry. Seems the older I get the more sensitive I am. It happens - I get that. It’s just so sad.

Our weather has warmed up - nice sunny day so far this morning which is good because I will be outside doing some more sanding.

Yes, it is heartbreaking to see this... and realizing that slowing down just a bit could have avoided such a fatal collision.
Sunny days at least give us the opportunity to do some things we need to accomplish!

      Liefs,
      Mariette

Yes, a very sad view to see such a beauty being killed.
There is a lot of speeding on that road and it might be the difference between survival or not for those mammals.

  10. Querida Mariette, achei lindo vocês de bicicleta num dia lindo de sol, muito felizes, mas...
ao descer a postagem, o bichinho morto na estrada, que coisa triste, e ninguém o arrastou dali ou lhe prestou socorro, somente você!
    Ah, humanos...
    Abraços para vocês!

  12. Riding a bicycle at a comfortable speed gives you far more chances to perceive the environment than moving in a car. You did enjoy a good autumn day.

Yes, the warm days are over with it feels like.
It is hard to see the population of native animals go down due to the cause of traffic encounters.
