Dad Sang Solo on Mom & Dad's 50th Wedding Anniversary

On Saturday, February 26, 1949 Mom & Dad got married by Dad's Maternal Uncle; Heeroom

Back then, they were not allowed to get married during Lent. Ash Wednesday was on March 2nd; Easter on April 17.

Mom & Dad after Church back at her Parents' place where they celebrated.
Posing against a straw mat here. Still remember the many uses of those mats, back in the 1950s.
Mom's black georgette dress in a size 6, or 36 European.
She was very slim back then and also taller.
Got this photo via FB from my First Cousin Maria Van Hoek-Gielen (her Mom was my Mom's sister).
Professional photos made earlier at a studio
Photo from Heeroom, on his second departure to Timor, Indonesia on April 21, 1949, less than two months after he blessed Mom & Dad's matrimony.
He was one of my most favorite people and I've written him several letters over the years.
On the day of our arrival, our final visit to Dad in The Netherlands, we talked a lot about Heeroom.
With quite some research, I've found lots of information about him.
He died because of acute kidney problems, while at a conference in Manilla, Philippines and got buried there. Will write more about Heeroom later!
Dad was taking his nap, but he jumped up to show us the photos from Heeroom's solemn requiem Mass and burial.
Dad greatly admired Heeroom, he was very proud of him and talked fondly about him.
Sad, that my siblings did not give Dad his appropriate requiem Mass, just as Dad organized for Mom, where his fellow choir members could have sung...
Dad, who got his Royal Certificates for being a Choir Member for exactly 81 years to the date of his death. He got a Certificate for 70 and 80 years; unique in The Netherlands!
Half a Century later...
Ready for Church... Mother and 2nd born daughter (me).
Wearing my Escada suit that I found at the Chattanooga, Tennessee Escada Outlet.
St. Lambertus, the Catholic Church in Horst, The Netherlands
Above in this photo you view some 14th and 15th Century art work, rescued from the bombed Church.
Taken on Mom & Dad's 50th Wedding Anniversary Mass.
As per Mom & Dad's request—I was the lay reader for their solemn 50th Anniversary Mass.
The Horster Mannenkoor sang, visible to the right.
That was the section where in my schooldays, the children were seated!
Walking back to the pew, to join Pieter and my siblings.
Dad's First Cousin made a video during Mass, brother Martin Van den Munckhof made the photos.
Sadly, their 55th, 60th and 65th Wedding Anniversary has not been celebrated with a Mass.
My sister Diny talked Mom & Dad out of that... only to rectify her own actions we think.
~
Husband Pieter did make a video during reception in the restaurant.
We first had coffee with pie, then dinner and afterwards the reception started.
Coffee and pie is being served during reception as well as alcoholic beverages and others.
This was the A.M.C. choir from the neighborhood. Dad's big choir had already given a serenade before these came to sing.
Toon Smits of the A.M.C. choir (Afhang – Middelijk) gently announces that they want to sing 'Wetscherni Swon', 'Evening Bells' as a closing for them at the reception of Mom & Dad's 50th wedding anniversary.
Dad says, I happen to have that song in 'my pocket'... and he takes a folded piece of paper out of his pocket and sings his 'favorite solo'...
Evening bells (dong, dong)
Evening bells (dong, dong)
How many thoughts (dong, dong)
They arouse! (dong, dong)
O youthful days (dong, dong)
Where I was born and bred (dong, dong)
Where I first loved (dong, dong)
Where Father's house stands (dong, dong)
And now how I, (dong, dong)
On forever parting (dong, dong)
Have heard the bells (dong, dong)
For my last time (dong, dong).
~
Those Russians knew something about melancholic sounding songs... This is a very old one from 1828.
Dad sang several Slavic songs, they all were his favorites!

Floriade 1992 on a Cold and Windy Day after Earthquake in Limburg

So, on April 11, 1992 we arrived on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in Amsterdam, with our 92 kilos of luggage, coming all the way from Jakarta, Indonesia.
No problems checking in with our courtesy cards in regard to Maximum Baggage Weight...
The customs inquired about the boxes and upon showing once again the photos from the robbery and explaining that all that was left we bring home, they let us pass.
Putting things in the locker and then traveling once more by rail to the South where my Parents lived.
This is husband Pieter posing in front of the tulips at my Parents' place.
Keep in mind that all our clothes got robbed; shoes and everything. Except what we had on our back and inside our luggage, coming from work in India...
We gave away both our hightop shoes to the people working in the hot compost, barefooted. You find link below post from previous adventures.
On April 13, during our 2nd night at my Parents' in my former bedroom, we woke up at 3:22 AM by an earthquake! The rattling and shaking lasted for 20 seconds.
Pieter said very calmly: 'Now THAT is an earthquake!'... Wow.
~
Yes, in my Province of Limburg... With 5.5 on the scale of Richter!
The above article appeared in the then bi-lingual Dutch/American newspaper the Windmill, a bi-weekly publication.
On April 15, I had my hair cut, the LONG braid got snatched off with the hairdresser's scissors. See post below about it where I show it being framed.
Happy at home and with short hair!
The weather is still inclement and rather cold.
We enjoy a nice Easter weekend and on April 20, on 2nd Easter Day we went to the Easter Concert of Dad's choir with a youth choir; very well.
On Monday we went to the city for buying a Sharp microwave for Mom & Dad as a gift.
We went to brother Piet's birthday on the 23rd.
On Saturday, April 25, we went with the early train of 6:30 AM to Zoetermeer for the Floriade. The biggest international Garden Exhibit that the Dutch hold every 10 years.
But oh, it was such inclement weather and cold and miserable...
We did not have the clothes for it, aside from our newly purchased leather jackets from the Leather Garment Factory in India.
Above, I'm admiring Begonias.
Cape violets...
I'm happy for being indoors in an orchid greenhouse and out of the chilling wind!
Wearing my newly bought sandals from Malioboro, Yogyakarta/Indonesia...
Remember ALL shoes got stolen. Those leggings were certainly not warming me much!
We both decided then and there to stock up on some warmer clothes, shoes and, all for keeping in The Netherlands...
Pieter was not as cold, even though wearing a short sleeved shirt was also not sufficient...
So typically Dutch with red tulips and lots of fragrant hyacinths.
Being indoors was a lot better, I see that here I swapped my sandals for shoes!
But we certainly enjoyed being there for the Floriade.
~
On April 26, brother Harry treated both of us and Mom & Dad on a dinner to celebrate his belated 12.5 year wedding anniversary.
Brother Harry on the left, with his wife and their three little ones...
It was very special, together.
We also celebrated Pieter's Birthday with family on the 29th.
That year, we'd come to The Netherlands early February, en route to our work to Indonesia, for celebrating my Birthday with my Parents and family and next day brother Harry's and also Mom's Birthday five days later.
So now fate had it, that due to our early leaving from Indonesia, also Pieter's Birthday got celebrated in our birth country.
Very special time this visit, for being with family and friends!
On May 1, on Friday, we go by train to the airport.
We had dropped off all the excessive luggage the day before, by car, and placed it in a locker.
There we go on May 1, with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines finally going home to Atlanta, Georgia/USA

We've come a long way with the remnants from our Life in Indonesia as baggage... Our Exodus!

BUT we sure got a Royal treatment with an upgrade to Business Class on our Courtesy Card with KLM
Menu card reads: Inspired by 'Floriade', the greatest flower show on earth.
Our lunch menu
Cold meal
KLM's Wine Cellar in the Sky
Wine
Champagne and wine...
Liquors and Aperitifs
Discover Holland flowerland... at Floriade 1992! The World Horticultural Exhibition is the most colorful and breathtaking event of the year. A unique show of flowers, plants, trees, vegetables and fruit. Held only once every ten years, Floriade will greet the world from April 11 to October 11 in Zoetermeer near The Hague.
KLM Royal Airlines is main sponsor and official carrier of Floriade 1992.

They sure did carry us back home in a very comfortable way with our upgrade to business class, thanks to the courtesy card we each had. We felt quite pampered in the upper deck.
A very appropriate way for sealing off our Life in Indonesia..

To University of Bologna, Vicenza, Venice and via Austria to The Netherlands

We did start early that Monday, October 29.
Via the mushroom farm and hotel Gallo for picking up the Americans at their hotel and off in two cars to the University of Bologna for meeting with Professor of Mycology, Floriano Ferri, an expert with Pleurotus.
Here I'm holding Pleurotus in my hand...
Wearing my cashmere sweater that Pieter brought home from the English Mushroom Days in Chester, 1984.
Pieter in Bologna with Professor Floriano Ferri
A lot of translations back and forth between English, Italian and Dutch...
Further Pleurotus discussion at the University of Bologna and there also lunch, as a lack of time.
We went to a private Pleurotus grower in Ferrera, a former student of Professor Floriano Ferri.
On Tuesday, October 30, first to the mushroom farm of the Sartor family.
Around 11:15 we left for Vicenza and after lunch with spawn representative Antonio, we visited a Pleurotus grower in Vicenza.
Pleurotus grower in Vicenza
The very first photo I did show you already some Pleurotus...
With the Pleurotus grower and his wife, spawn representative and our friend Tommaso, American colleagues and Martin, Pieter's former student around the table with a wine and sweet potatoes.
Next day we got up at 5:45 on October 31 and we picked up our colleagues. Together with Martin we drove to Venice and via another Pleurotus farm we were at the airport by 11:00.
We said our good byes to Long Chi Wu and Frank Gabell, as they departed for the USA.
A little bit time for us in Venice and I found an 18ct golden ring with red coral in a rose form.
Matching with the charm I had for decades! Very happy with it.
By 16:30 we all met in Jesolo, resort area near Venice where Tommaso with his wife and Martin's wife and daughter had come to meet us.
After some shoe shopping (gift) we went to a fish restaurant in the direction of home.
Delicious meal and by 23:00 we were back in Asolo and to bed.
On November 1, finally some time for Tommaso's mushroom farms.
Pieter had a meeting with the Sartor staff and I had a coffee at Annelies' and time to write my diary.
We had dinner at Gianni', where Frank stared at his pigeon soup before...
Always delicious home cooked meals, by him and his wife.
We walked in Asolo together.
Wearing my self made woolen skirt. The fabric was a gift from a friend here in Dublin, GA who owned a woolen mill...
On Friday, November 2, we got picked up by Tommaso after he'd checked out for us at the hotel.
Now off to Montebelluna and that yielded lovely black boots for me!
We always have been treated royally.
We said our goodbyes at the mushroom farms, also to Martin and his brother.
Now off into the direction of the Brenner Pass to Austria.
Our hotel from 1981, Staudacherhof' was closed so we sleep at hotel Obermühle.
We had a delicious meal and were on time in bed!
Saturday, November 2 we got up at 7:00 and after a delicious breakfast (oh, how we miss that bread here in the USA) we were riding by 9:00 via Munich.
With a stop in Altenahr, Germany and a quick visit with a dear friend, just as a coffee break, we were at my Parent's home by 19:15 with Babi Pangang from the Chinese restaurant...
We ourselves did drive some 3800 km and in Italy they drove another 1000 km with us.
*
On Wednesday November 7, we had a 25th wedding anniversary of Pieter's best friend.
A lovely day with lots of people we know.
On our wedding anniversary day,  the 10th of November, we flew back to Atlanta, USA...
~~☼~~
Thanks for your visit and comment!

Classic Escada Skirt Suit with Silk Gucci Scarf

On February 26, blogger friend Marie-Thérèse Norris from The French Touch, wrote about Going Gray the Right Way. She also mentioned the days of the well-dressed Church Ladies.
That prompted me to wear my classic wool/silk/cotton blend Escada skirt suit to Church on March 5.
It is a plaid with dark navy so I did wear navy panty hose with my Escada pumps and Escada hand bag.
The suit came from the Escada outlet in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The handbag from the Escada boutique in Jakarta, Indonesia when it was on sale.
Happy with some sun rays...
The Silk Gucci Scarf, in fact a neckerchief, I bought in Singapore at the airport, tax free.
Going 18 years back in time... at my Parents' home in Horst, The Netherlands.
This very skirt suit I did wear on Mom & Dad's 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Both, Mom and I had been to the hair dresser before heading to Church on February 27, 1999.
Mom had requested me to be the lay reader at the St. Lambertus Kerk (Church) in Horst, The Netherlands for their 50th Wedding Anniversary Mass.
The Horster Mannenkoor Choir is seen to the right, honoring Dad on his Anniversary.
Of course as their eldest, I was happy to grant her that wish!
Spunky girl is with me in this photo...
A short sleeved woolen navy sweater from Escada is underneath.
Not bulky and very comfortable to wear.
Lots of fond memories around this classic Escada Skirt Suit and even if it is already 18 years old, it for sure is a keeper!
Here our Verbena Lanai® Blush White are already blooming at their best.
This Gucci silk scarf had some navy, gray and cream tones so it worked perfect.
Those were the perks of being and International Consultant and having a stop-over in Singapore; a shoppers paradise!
51% cotton; 49% rayon is from the short sleeved sweater
The suit is 32% Wool, 28% PA Nylon, 23% Silk, 17 Cotton and very comfortable in our climate!
The short sleeved sweater is 51% wool with 49% rayon.
Handbag I found in Jakarta, Indonesia on sale at the Escada Boutique.
Low heel pumps came from Chattanooga, TN Escada outlet.

Thanks for your visit!

{32 Years ago on November 10}

It all went so fast; too fast!
But I guess that's not ONLY my problem.
HAPPY LOOKING AT MY NEW HUSBAND PIETER
We flew back two days before, from Atlanta, Georgia USA to Amsterdam, The Netherlands and by train with our dachshund Mauzie, to Horst aan de Maas in the South.
Here we are in the City hall of Horst aan de Maas.
The Registrar to the left, Pieter, me, brother Piet who was witness, his fiancé Rianne, Mom & Dad
The Registrar performing the Civil Wedding Ceremony.
Pieter's Mom to the left and my youngest brother Jan to the right, next to Rianne.
Pieter's eldest brother Thé, to the left and my brother Piet to the right; our two witnesses.
Some close friends were there as well, including dear friend Ellie who made these pictures and picked up Pieter's Mom at he nursing home.
White roses from Pieter's Goddaughter...
Pieter signing...
Me signing the BEST contract ever!
Done deal; for LIFE!
My brother Piet underwrites our Civil Matrimony
Jet-lag... arrived the day before on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines from Atlanta to Amsterdam, but feeling HAPPY!
Pieter's brother Thé signing our Civil Matrimony.
Sad that the 3 loved ones to the left in this photo, are no longer with us...
Pieter's Mom, Thé and my Mom are all in heaven.
And now Dad too has joined them.
We both lost a lot of our hair over those 32 years but everything is still sealed inside our hearts.
Fond memories with true happiness forever.
The Registrar hands us the Marriage License.
Mom & Dad congratulating us...
Dad kissing his eldest daughter...
Brother Piet's then fiancé Rianne, now happily married with two grown up children.
Sweet Sister-In-Law Dora who did provide a festive evening for us at her home.
My youngest brother Jan, who together with my brother Piet sat at Mom's death bed...
He was the only one that took a day off from work to be present.
The others blamed us for not having mailed out wedding invitations so they could get a paid day off from work!
Due to Pieter's ex not wanting to sign the divorce papers for half a year, we had no choice but to arrange things via the phone from the USA and fly back to our birth country The Netherlands.
Thank you sweet Dora for all you did for us during your life!
We will meet again in heaven and so happy that we had a chance to pamper them when they came to visit us in 1992...
