Yes, we both being 1st generation immigrants, do have a lot of Gratitude for Thanksgiving 2013!
Being alive and healthy and living in freedom with new found Friends that became Family is a Blessing.
'Friends are family members without kinship'. -- Ronald Giphart Dutch writer
Like those 1621 Mayflower Pilgrims who celebrated Thanksgiving for God's goodness.
What a fate for half of those passengers that survived the sea and the first harsh winter...
And what a FEAST after those Mayflower conditions:
Sleeping with 80 persons in a cabin made to hold 30 people...
Food - Ship's biscuits that were infested by roaches, weevils and maggots...
Warm meals were too risky because they would set the sails at fire due to winds blowing those flames...
For 66 - Sixty Six days living like that!
Indeed, after a Prosperous Growth during the Summer of 1621 they had a Thanksgiving Celebration for God's goodness... Only 50 pilgrims survived of the original 102
The Food - Wild turkey etc.
No wonder that this became a NATIONAL FEAST - Thanksgiving History (just scroll down)
as early as 1777 but without an official Proclamation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt did just that in 1941.
PILGRIMS, NOT PURITANS...
PILGRIMS, NOT PURITANS...
Often those early Mayflower PILGRIMS are being confused with the later PURITANS
Pilgrims, Not Puritans (link)
The story behind the first U.S. Thanksgiving
Wishing all American readers a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Dearest Mariette;
ReplyDeleteOh, I was reminded of the hardship of the passengers of the Mayflower Pilgrims!!!
I LOVED the quote from the Dutch writer 'Friends are family members without kinship', my friend. Now I can sense the feeling to myself receiving sweet comments for me from blog friends ♡♡♡
Happy happy Thanksgiving to you and your husband♬♬♬
Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan to my dear friend in America, xoxo Miyako*
Dearest Miyako,
DeleteWe all have many reasons for feeling Gratitude, compared with so many before us and even around us in this world!
Glad you now learned about the Dutch quote about Friends... Yes, dear Japanese friend, even without any relatives being alive, we still will be surrounded with 'Family members without kinship'! There has been a reason for why we all became bloggers and found meaningful friendships around the world. We cannot YET understand all the mystic in life but nothing happens without a reason...
Hugs and thanks for your sweet wishes; our Thanksgiving was a perfect one with 'Family'!
Mariette
Dear Mariette,iI wish you and your husband a very Happy thanksging Day!!

Dimi...
Dearest Dimi,
DeleteThank you very much; it has been a perfect day!

Hello Mariette, It is too easy to confuse the Pilgrims and the Puritans, or at least to consider that they were the same type of people who came at slightly different times. The information you provide will help us to distinguish them and their philosophies.
ReplyDeleteGetting back to Thanksgiving, I really miss the family meals in Ohio, and I am sure that yours will incorporate all the wonderful, Pilgrim-inspired elements, with an extra dollop of Dutch tradition. Have a great Holiday.
--Jim
Dearest Jim,
DeleteWell, for the not so avid readers out there, it is indeed too easy to confuse the Pilgrims and Puritans! You also love history and are well read and both, my husband and I have always loved to read. It is the best education there is. The quote: 'Show me your books and I tell you who you are', is such a valid one. Our home looks very much like a library with added reading now on a tablet.
Wish you could have enjoyed our rich Family Thanksgiving here in Georgia... We were invited by our best Friends! Hope in spirit yours was a happy one too!
Hugs,
Mariette
Lieve groetjes,
Mariette
Happy Thanks Giving to you and your families.

Dearest Kay,

Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely history of a day that is particularly American. (And not the beginning of a shopping season that has gotten completely out of hand.)
A Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your family...........*s*
Dearest Suzi,
DeleteThis story makes one especially feel gratitude for the many blessings we count, compared to those early Pilgrims... Indeed, the beginning commercial shopping season is NOT what this is all about...
Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving yourself, like we had!
Hugs,
Mariette
Come è bello quel quadro!godetevi la bella festa!Baci,Rosetta
ReplyDeleteCara Rosetta,
Baci,
Mariette
Thank you for your wonderful post and happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
ReplyDeleteGreetings, Conni
Dearest Conni,
DeleteYou are more than welcome, glad you enjoyed this post about history. We did have a great Thanksgivings Day!
Hugs,
Mariette
Lieve Mariette,
Liefs,
Mariette
Dear Mariette,
ReplyDeleteJust popping over to wish you and Pieter a Happy Thanksgiving!

Michiko
Dearest Michiko,
DeleteThank you very much and yes, we can be grateful for God's goodness in many ways.
Hugs to you,
Mariette
Good Morning Mariette, I think it is so good to give thanks, to remember the hardship which the Pilgrims faced and the obstacles they overcame. To spend 66 days in such cramped conditions, in search of a new life, was so very very brave and then to cope with the harsh conditions when they first landed near Cape Cod, they must have wondered how they would survive that first winter... and thanks to Samoset and Squanto they are taught how to survive in this New World.
ReplyDeleteI do feel we need to take the time to think about everything we have, which so easily can be taken for granted.... especially our freedom.
I really enjoyed this post.
Have a lovely weekend Mariette.
Best Wishes
Daphne
Dearest Daphne,
DeleteThank you for your meaningful comment and yes, we ought to take the time to count our many blessings and above all our Freedom. Not everybody on this world is enjoying this. And compared to those Pilgrims we all are double blessed!
Hugs and happy weekend!
Mariette
Wishing you and your hubby a most wonderful Thanksgiving weekend Mariette!
ReplyDeleteHope you are feeling better.

Hello Mariette,
ReplyDeletebut you know I'm just reading a book
on the history of the early English settlers who emigrated
America in the 1600s?! I find the story very charming,
although there were some ugly moments ....
So Happy Thanksgiving
LOve Susy x
Dearest Susy,
DeleteOh those Pilgrims, the first to move to the New World via Leiden, The Netherlands had to endure lots of hardships and less than half of them survived... What a fate! Later a lot more Puritans did follow but that was already different for them.
We enjoyed a very wonderful Thanksgiving with our New World Family!
Hugs,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
Lieber Gruss,
Mariette
It's a lovely picture from thanksgiving. Have a nice weekend.

You too, enjoy a happy and cozy weekend!

We are so lucky. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Mariette :)
ReplyDeleteDearest Dee,
DeleteCertainly we all are blessed for living NOW... no comparison to those Pilgrims' 1st Thanksgiving!
Yes we did have a lovely Thanksgiving at the home of our best Friends/Family without kinship.
Hugs,
Mariette
