Most of you might know the Praying Mantis already. Just caught one on camera the other day...
Long legged insect...
At the entrance door to our Rose Suite...
Not easy to make them pose for the camera!
Told him that a white back ground would make him look better...
See how he looks at the camera?

they are very intriguing insects, for sure.
ReplyDeleteDearest Theresa,
DeleteThey look like they're very nosy as to figure out what I was doing in their territory...
Hugs,
Mariette
Insects are cute, intriguing and weird at the same token! I'm not afraid of them, I don't mind them unless they're gonna bite me or something, lol! Great shot!
ReplyDeleteFABBY
Dearest Fabby,
DeleteNo, we certainly don't volunteer for being bitten by them! But it is interesting for capturing them on camera so we can see their 'faces' enlarged and study them just the way they seem to study us!
Hugs,
Mariette
Ha! My 15 year old who is 6 feet now would run screaming in the opposite direction if he saw this. He still hates bugs and doesn't even like to look at pictures of them. Strange as when he was little, he used to let ants and roaches crawl all over him when he was outside playing. When we stayed in a bungalow in Sri Lanka several years ago, there was one on the picture frame and he wouldn't even go into the room until we could get the bellboy to get it out. I sure hope he gets over his fear of all crawly things. :) Best wishes, Tammy
ReplyDeleteDearest Tammy,
DeleteLet's hope indeed he gets over that stage! I've always found them interesting to look at and never had any fear of insects. Though I hate roaches.
Hugs,
Mariette

Elisabeth
Liebe Elisabeth,
Liefs,
Mariette
He looks big! Intriguing indeed .
ReplyDeleteDearest Pallavi,
DeleteIt is a rather large insect indeed but very interesting to observe and he checking me out...
Hugs,
Mariette
Oh ! I admire you !! You had the mettle to take photos !!! If I have seen it I i would run out like a champion runner 100 meters !!!
ReplyDeleteDearest Olympia,
DeleteFor an insect like this I would never run as they eat different food; they never would attack a human being! Just out of curiosity and with this photo size we get to see how they really are looking.
Hugs,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteFrom the size I would say yours is probably a female. You were fortunate to find her on a bell where she could be easily photographed. I find them fascinating and elegant. Hopefully she will be around for a bit.
As you may remember we had a pair of them on our dahlias for most of the summer. We are hoping to find egg casings somewhere.
Enjoy your week end!..........*s*
Dearest Suzi,
DeleteHaving no idea about male and female, just got lucky for photographing the species. We observed one before but it was high on the wall of the living room and we were too far off on the balcony...
I do recall your photo of the couple you had: http://thesmartcat.blogspot.com/2013/09/wordless-wednesday_25.html
My photo was also taken on September 3...
Happy weekend to you and hugs!
Mariette
Hello Mariette, You are lucky to have praying mantises living near your house. They are common over here also. I have seen a number of living ones, and even discovered them in art. Last weekend, I saw some both real (dried) and carved, displayed on an altar. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask about them.
ReplyDeleteDearest Jim,
DeleteIn Indonesia we have seen them also and they are very interesting to watch. You were lucky for having seen also some carved ones. The dried version is not so good... I hate that they kill exotic butterflies and such just for collecting them.
Hugs,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
Fijn weekend, lieve groet
ReplyDeleteBeste Willy,
Mariette
Dearest Mariette
ReplyDeleteSuch animals we do not have in Sweden! It looks very pleasant, actually. Sure it looks into the camera :)
He a nice weekend!
Kajsa
Dearest Kajsa,
DeleteThey might not live that far north... Here we have plenty of them. They don't bite humans and it looks very curious into the camera or at me!

Michiko
Dearest Michiko,
DeleteI really was lucky for having my camera already in my hands when I did spot this big insect. Loved seeing him up close myself because in reality you barely get a chance as they move.
Wishing you a lovely and hopefully sunny weekend.
Hugs,
Mariette
Mooi monsterbeest.

Stupende foto cara Mariette!
Mariette
Dearest Mariette,
ReplyDeleteI know this insect, we have them here too, but they are not very common. I remember admiring one years ago, on my favorite walk up to a little chapel overlooking the valley.
Have a lovely weekend!
Hugs from rainy, snowy, stormy, cold Europe
Dearest Anna,
DeleteThey do live in more moderate regions so it might depend on the season or even year, if you get to see them.
Wishing you a cozy indoor weekend and stay warm with all that snow, rain and wind!
Hugs,
Mariette
I also wanted to add that you look great in that outfit from the previous post! That shawl is a beauty!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs :)
Dearest Anna,
DeleteThank you very much for your kind compliment!
Hugs,
Mariette
Liebe Mariette,
Mariette
My son accidentally stepped on one some years ago, he was so upset. He tried to save it after but wasn't able to so the poor little fella died:( They're definitely very interesting to look at!
ReplyDeleteDearest Victoria,
DeleteSure in California and also in Florida again you will get to see them a lot. For sure they are not yet extinct but accidents can happen where we unintentionally kill a critter...
Happy weekend to you and enjoy the better weather!
Hugs,
Mariette
Little Leo would love this he finds them to be interesting and likes to take them and put them on his mum's pillow to hear her squeal
ReplyDeleteDearest Jo-Anne,
DeleteHaha, this is a mean little kid!
Hugs,
Mariette
