Caring for our Squirrels while at 7th North American Mushroom Conference in New Orleans

On Thursday, March 3 of 1988, we both had put out the entire box with pecan nuts, on our patio.

This was meant to feed our 'tamed' squirrels that would be without us for a while, while we drove to New Orleans for attending the 7th North American Mushroom Conference, see link below post.

On February 19, we did purchase these Pecans at the Rotary Club's auction.
So we put the box on the patio, under the roofed area.
Right away our furry friends showed up!

Ah, you got us pecans...?
We thought that they each day would get some to EAT!

Nope, they went to the bottom of that box, the very day we put them out!
They buried them in our yard!

All tuckered out, on the tiles of our patio...
We were hoping that they would find all their burial spots!

Below you find previous posts about the Conference we both were heading to:

  1. So cute. They know how to plan for the future. :) My Mammaw had a pecan tree in her front yard and she always had shelled pecans in her freezer for us to eat. They were so good.

    1. Dearest Tammy,
Yes, they are in general hard working and smart.
We have each afternoon tea and mixed unsalted nuts. The shelled pecans from Costco are the best!
      Hugs,

  2. Hello Mariette, I would not have wasted the pecans on the squirrels. I would have eaten them myself, and gotten the squirrels a box of acorns. It is no surprise that they took them all the first day. After all, they had no idea how long this sudden bounty was going to last!

    1. Dearest Jim,
No they were not wasted on the squirrels, we got so much back from them, it was so much fun to watch them play. But who would have thought they would get to the bottom of this box, right away...?!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    2. Wait, I have a question. Did any pecan trees start growing in your yard? --Jim

    3. Dearest Jim,
Not that we know... Campbell Soup made us move up north by October 19 of 1988...

    1. Dearest Grace,
Hopefully they remembered where they buried them!
Cute they are, they also know how to play. They were tamed by us and I could hand feed them. They jumped at Pieter's short when he was walking in the yard. Such rascals.
We never had this kind of experience again and sure not with having kitties...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  4. Dearest Mariette,
You are indeed kind to feed your little guys pecans. Ours have to make do with peanuts!
Love that last picture. He/she certainly enjoyed the nuts!

We always loved our garden critters.
The last picture he's tuckered out from running back and forth to hide them; not from eating!

    1. Dearest Victor,
We had several of those cute ones. One mama squirrel that I tamed had two boys... they were the cutest 'pets' we ever had. Sadly we had to move away.

    1. Dearest Helen,
It was hysterical watching them work so hard! They felt safe and quite at home to lay like that on our patio...
No, you never revealed that part. Hope it thrives well under that name. Ours, as a pot plant on the patio got too tall and kept blowing over by the heavy storms when the hurricane season was not too far away. So we got rid of it. It is hard to handle those prickly stems!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

Eran amigos muy lindos, casi como nuestras mascotas y vinieron por la comida de hecho. Incluso podría llamarlos. Pero esto fue hilarante cómo vaciaron toda la caja en un día...

Thank you and these 'tamed' squirrels were quite a riot! We missed them so much after we had to move...
The paint job paid for itself when we had to sell our home; it was a quality job.
