Our First Stay in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

So from our stop at Kennedy Space Center's Visitor Center, we continued driving south on I-95.
Compared to European travel on the Interstate, this was easy and fast.
BUT that was in December 10 of 1984... NOT anymore like that and especially around the Fort Lauderdale area where we were heading towards.

Our destination was the Mariott Hotel & Marina for 3 nights.
We had a great room with balcony!
On Tuesday, December 11, we go to the public beach in Fort Lauderdale.
We had our stretcher in the car.
Time for reading my magazines...
And time for a bit of tanning...
We did not swim as the ocean was cold!
Funny to see the bag from Walterigato Appartments in Jesolo Lido, Italy... That was my previous beach vacation.
That's me on September 3, 1982 in Jesolo at said apartment on the beach...
We shared our lunch sandwiches with the seagulls and a dove that ate from my hand.
With our binoculars we studied the birds and a container ship that came passing by.
We stayed there from 10:00–15:00 with our winter skin...
On Wednesday, December 12 we did swim at the Marriott pool, while Mauzie stayed in the car.
The pool was not heated but we both swam!
Slowly getting in the pool...
Once in the water it was lovely!
From 11:00–13:00 we stayed at the pool.
View from our balcony.
Fort Lauderdale is also called the Venice of America, with all its waterways.
To the right you see the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 hotel where we later would be staying a few times...
In the afternoon we went shopping at the famous Las Olas Boulevard.
Pieter got a pair of shorts and a pair of wool plaid trousers.
And I got an ice cream...
Next day we drove with Mauzie to Orlando for 2 nights...

Stay tuned!

Our Very First Stop at Kennedy Space Center

On Sunday, December 9 of 1984 we drove South on Interstate I-95 and spent the night at Scottish Inn, St. Augustine.
On Monday, we continued towards Fort Lauderdale and did stop at Kennedy Space Center and did admire the interesting rockets and space shuttles near the Visitor Center.
You needed to buy a ticket in order to tour by bus the rest but we did travel on...
Here I stand, together with Mauzie girl our dachshund.
Unreal the length of such a Space Shuttle... Me with Mauzie to the right.
One can only admire NASA for having accomplished this!
Pieter with Mauzie girl standing there...
Me with Mauzie standing below rocket...
Closeup
Pieter having an up close look
Pieter with Mauzie and the sun was reflecting in my lens...
We're in Florida — the Sunshine State!
In the distance, over the water, you see one of the huge buildings where you can visit when getting the tour by bus.
We would be back here; many times that is, with our guests–family and friends.
Below the tree, to the right on the water's edge is a Great Blue Heron.
Those are mainly scanned negatives, done with the Kodak Negative and Slide Scanner.

On to Fort Lauderdale... stay tuned!

Lies the Lithuanian Mare that Evacuated husband Pieter, Brothers and Parents

In my previous post, see link below,
I mentioned the evacuation in October of 1944 till April 1945.
It was their mare Lies, pulling the horse wagon.
Here my older brother Toon is seated on Lies in probably 1941, at home with Keesje our German Spitz.
Again, Toon seated on Lies, no saddle – there were not such luxuries.
A Lithuanian horse is not that tall.
Lithuanian Horse, a cold-blooded is an ancient indigenous breed from the northwestern European cold-blood.
Height: 1.63–1.68 meters or 64–66 inches.
This is the 4–wheeled wagon, built by Pieter's Dad, which they used for their evacuation.
Dad had bought from a demolished hotel in Arnhem, for little money an enormous oak beam.
That beam got sawn into appropriate parts, by his friend Ross, in Babberich, who had a sawmill.
At a wrecker he bought axles, springs and wheels and during winter he build a nice 4-wheel wagon for Lies.
~
This photo is from the early 1940s taken at home with husband Pieter seated to the right with Keesje the German Spitz.
Pieter's brother Toon, is seated to the left with a row of cousins, daughters from aunt in center top and aunt living across the street.
Pieter's and Toon's Dad is seated at the top, wearing his wool Fedora Hat and next to him is the youngest sister of Pieter's Mom who is seated to the right.
When they had Lies not that long, she got terribly wounded while pulling the wagon, the one seen in above photo.
An axle clip had come out for whatever reason and therefore the lamoen tree fell on her heels...
She hurt herself badly and ended up in a ditch. Pieter's Dad was on the wagon, and he got her home.
The vet had to come by bike and he had no hope for Lies.
But Dad did not want to give her up 'yet'.
So with the help of two neighbors he got her hind legs into a cooled down bath with natural soda granules, dissolved in boiling water.
Lies, after a few times of being helped, already stuck out her hind legs to go into her soda bath–and she got healed!
Just an impression of how such an evacuation looked like... (photo not ours).
Pieter's Dad had fastened an oak armoire on top of the wagon, for transporting some clothes and also for having the white bed sheet on top, as a cover for not getting attacked from the air.
Pieter's Mom sat on the wagon, with Keesje the dog and his Dad and the three boys all walked.
Lies, the horse pulled for two days in a row, the total distance of 40 km or 25 miles.
The first night they slept all in the Market Hall in Doetinchem and the horses got taken home by local farmers for being fed and they were returned next morning.
It was when they almost reached their destination, that Keesje the white German Spitz was gone...
In that half year, Pieter and his Dad once went back home to Groessen with the horse wagon and Lies, to pick up potatoes and carrots that had been ensiled. That ride went faster without any load and they'd left early morning for making it back in one day as well.
Actually the carrots were the neighbors, the Meijer brothers', but they no longer had a horse, as it got killed by heavy shelling before they evacuated. The neighborhood people ate it.
The ride back with the load of potatoes and carrots on the wagon, was of course heavy for Lies and they let her have a break in Kilder, at one of Mom's relatives, before going on.
Then, while passing through Terborg, they spotted Keesje!
The butcher in Terborg claimed it was his white Spitz, so Pieter's Dad enlisted a patrolman who wisely took Keesje, and ordered both parties to call the doggy.
Keesje ran towards Pieter and his Dad, so like the judgment of Solomon, it got solved.
~
On the way home after liberation in April, they stayed for one night at a farmer, somewhere half way.
~

Several months after the war, Pieter got to ride back with his Dad, to the Varsseveld region, where they'd been evacuated to, together with the mayor and leaders from the municipality of Duiven.
Realizing that there was absolutely no public transportation re–established yet!
Seated on some benches made inside a former military Dodge truck from Jan Busink, who had a transport business.
By checking on line, for the correct spelling of Busink, we found his granddaughter Diane Busink; a Dutch writer; what a small world!
Pieter's neighbor Dr. Jan Wolters, made Pieter read a speech at the town square, to thank all the town leaders of Varsseveld, Silvolde, Terborg and hamlet Wisch; a very nice gesture by those town leaders.
Neighbor Dr. Jan Wolters had made then 16–year old Pieter practice at home in the barn, and emphasized to be 'broad out'!
Little did Pieter know at that time, that in the future he would give many lectures and speeches at International Congresses, in several languages...

The farmers where Pieter's Parents and his brothers stayed, two brothers, remained forever close like family. Pieter's family was so grateful and it was only natural that they always got included for any wedding anniversary and such.
Pieter with Toon stayed with Gerrit and Mina Nijhof, with only daughter Rieki at farmstead d'n Banninkhof and his Mom & Dad and eldest brother stayed with Jan Nijhof.

Even I have met them at the funeral of Pieter's Mom on November 24, 1989.
Just learned that Rieki Eggink–Nijhof passed away on August 19, 2021...
Maybe her children would appreciate this info.
We still have one photo where they probably could identify her.

Ancient Grey Stuart Tartan fabric from Chester UK

Found some new purpose for my Ancient Grey Stuart Tartan skirt.
Pieter did bring the fabric home from Chester when he went to the British Mushroom Days, together with a red cashmere v-neck sweater seen here: To University of Bologna, Vicenza, Venice and via Austria to The Netherlands
Such are the bonus parts of travel!
So, I created a skirt...
This photo is from December 12... when I did wear it.
The painters had taken down the shutters of our windows...
Wearing it with my newly scored Lela Rose Sweater hand knitted in soft 70% wool and 30% silk.
This is me on February 28, 1985 with my Dachshund Mauzie girl, visible to the left...
Together with a Kashmir Pashmina shawl.
See 1:35 minute video: Pashmina Kashmiri Woolen Shawls
Also see this British Pathé video: Kashmir Travelogue item showing the long journey of Kashmir wool from Himalayan goats to chick London sweaters (or from Chester... 😉).
Did you notice that I've taken off the light plaid part, in order to shorten the skirt?
Label saved in diary... THE ANCIENT GREY STEWART TARTAN
Like it better with this length, don't you agree?
My taupe Escada pumps match nicely, also got a purse with that.
Already in April I'd scored the lovely sweater... Too warm for wearing it then, so I waited.
Fell in love with this Lela Rose Leaf-Knit Pullover Sweater, Taupe when I saw it at Neiman Marcus but did NOT like its price tag of $ 995.00
The $ 175.99 did sound a LOT better and it will last me for life...

Our Contract for Life

On November 10, 1983 we both signed our Contract for Life...
May God grant us some more time together!
So happy with this photo that we received just recently...
It was in Mom & Dad's Estate and we never had it.
This one also came from Mom & Dad's Estate...
So happy with them since it is Mom congratulating me.
Peet Kleeven from Happy Hair did my hair.
This is also a new treasure.
We had it in the negatives that I've recently scanned.
My dear Mother-in-law!
This one I also just recently scanned from a negative.
Mother and her youngest son Pieter...
Guess we gave them to our Mother-in-law and with all the hectic travel and scheduling we forgot.
We had only immigrated 2.5 months earlier, together with our Dachshund Mauzie girl. So we all three had to fly back to The Netherlands for our Civil Marriage at my hometown's City Hall.
Pieter's ex did NOT sign papers before we immigrated... that complicated matters for us, also in regard to the green card application!
But we managed, arriving two days prior to our wedding.
On November 11, just  being one day married, we attended the 25th wedding anniversary of Pieter's oldest brother Thé, who is to my left.
Wearing one of two wool skirt suits that we'd found in October in San Francisco at Macy's.
Pieter is in his Burberry suit.
Again, Peet Kleeven had done my hair...
Yes, feeling very happy!

My 3rd Trip to Switzerland and visiting Jakob Schlaepfer Couture Fabrics Designer in St. Gallen

Lucky me on May 3, 1985 after finishing my sewing creation of cut out cotton voile couture fabric that I got gifted by our Swiss friends, after visiting the famous Jakob Schlaepfer in St. Gallen.
On April 02, 1985 we had traveled from the USA to Amsterdam and next we flew from Düsseldorf/Germany to Zürich/Switzerland where we rented a small Mercedes 190 and drove to Herisau.
It was great for seeing Hans-Jörg and his sister Barbara with husband Max again!
We went on to Austria by car to visit the Sohm family, see previous post below.
Back to Waldstatt where we had supper at Max & Barbara's home and talked till 23:00, mainly about the mushroom business...
Next morning breakfast at 7:00 and Pieter went with Max to the mushroom farm and in the afternoon they both took us on a tour at Jakob Schlaepfer in St. Gallen.
BAMBOLA, the Boutique for Fashion-Enthusiasts
Jakob Schlaepfer & Co AG, Teufener Strasse 11, CH-9001 St. Gallen
The famous Jakob Schlaepfer company's own embroidery boutique. It exports St. Gallen embroidery worldwide and supplies Haute Couture fashion houses.
Having studied fashion design before ending up in the mushroom business, of course I was having a ball!
By the way, Jörg Kuhn, Barbara's Dad also had been in the textile industry before starting into mushroom growing, using the old textile building first.
Jakob Schlaepfer is listed 2nd from the top on the left, among the leading Couture fabrics.
Some other famous Couture fabric brands...
Since 1904,  the Swiss firm Jakob Schlaepfer has produced couture fabrics for Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, Marc Jacobs, and Prada, among others. However, last year the company created a collection of couture-worthy textiles specifically for the home. For Jakob Schlaepfer's new Décor line, artistic director Michele Rondelli and his design team created 22 opulent patterns that offer all of the detail found in the company's regular fabrics but have been adapted for use in the home. Standouts in the collection include Evaliia, with embroidered metallic flowers on delicate tulle, each studded with a pearl or Swarovski crystal; Bojan, which is adorned with hand-embossed sequins densely overlapped like fish scales; and Amurpaille, a gold brocade woven with metallic thread, overprinted with a floral pattern, and covered in embossed clear sequins. The collection, available in the United States through Savel, is priced from $ 57 per yard for plain tulle to $ 690 per yard for the more intricate Bojan pattern.
This map also gives you an idea of where in Switzerland in the north east St. Gallen is located.
After first getting a guided tour where they explained the different weaving procedures, we ended up at this famous Bambola Boutique where I became the recipient of a fabulous piece of cotton voile with lace embroidery.
We thanked our friends again for such a regal gift and drove back to the airport for our flight back from Zürich/Switzerland to Düsseldorf/Germany and driving to The Netherlands where we arrived by 22:15.
Mauzie, my Dachshund girl, was as happy with the result as I was on May 3, exactly one month later.
It was quite a challenge for cutting out the embroidered edging.
With a very sharp, small special scissor I got that done.
Did create a kind of a cummerbund, for wrapping around the waist with buttons and loops in the back.
On September 3, 2000 I'd altered the length in a more usable length.
Still have this Couture gem!
Even the Queen of England used Jakob Schlaepfer for her Golden Jubilee 2012...

From the link below, about Mushroom Friends in Austria on April 15, in 1987, husband Pieter had gotten up at 4:45 for fetching his American Campbell Soup colleagues and driving to the Düsseldorf/German airport for their 8:00 flight to Zürich/Switzerland.
By 9:30 my youngest brother Jan called and told me that his boss needed to drive there by car, in the afternoon, for delivering a new engine...
So I quickly called him and offered for being his chauffeur instead. He gladly accepted.

Jan Thielen picked me up by 11:45 and with his lunch, he took a beer, after asking if I would do the driving.
So I drove in his BMW to the destination of Full in Switzerland where the Kuhn compost business is located and arrived there by 18:30.
Hans Jörg and his Dad Jörg Kuhn were a little surprised, Pieter had told them that maybe I would come along as well. By 19:00 Pieter arrived with his colleagues and we had a good dinner at the Bahnhof hotel all together.
Happily snuggled up with Pieter under the down duvet...
Next morning breakfast together at 7:15 and Pieter went on to the Sohm/Austria company, as I went with Jan Thielen to the mushroom farm in Full, and via another stop at a customer in Herrenberg, below Stuttgart/Germany.
Via lunch in a farmers town by 14:45 heading for Horst, The Netherlands.
Did drive that day a total of 600 km and at a speed of 170 km/hr or 105 mi/hr and reached home by 20:30 where Pieter just had arrived at 20:20...

Some fun trip and for me it was my 4th Swiss visit... Both of us drove once more in 1995 to Switzerland for a visit and on to Italy but no photos, only video...
