On July 10, we could rescue some beautiful Crocosmia flowers from the rain. They were almost flat on the ground... but still pretty enough for filling a vase. Let me show them to you.
Here they are on the new Durango Ambra, Cerdomus GREEN Tiles from Italy, on top of our balcony.
The weather is rather dark with all our rain for the last weeks on end.
Our grass has never looked that green.
Behind our pond you cannot even walk, so soggy and also near the creek...
Ah, a bit of sunshine, it looks brighter now!
The name Crocosmia comes from the Greek words for saffron (krokos) and smell (osme).
They are from the Iris family, native to the Cape area in South Africa.
Looking lovely in this plain Baccarat crystal vase.
There are so many varieties of Crocosmia that it is very hard to tell what exactly these are.
This is a closeup that I took on my desk in the office...

They look beautiful with so much detail...

Surprise! One looked quite different...

DeleteOh, the Iris family extends to a very wide variety. It is interesting to study the world of 'flora'. Glad you also got to enjoy those bright blue Butterfly Bush flowers in my previous post. Those Clerodendrums are truly amazing.

Crocosmia is a totally new plant to me. I think I would have to lift the bulbs to glow it here. We are not at all reliably zone 5!

DeleteFor your region I have of course no idea how a South African native would grow. Here they do well, although we did not see any flowers during the very hot and dry summers. But nature is strong and often it recovers over time.
We enjoy again heavy rain...

They are pretty and glad you saved them from rain. They look very happy in the vase :-) The flower in last picture looks very different. It looks as if it is still trying to turn into orange :-)

DeleteOh, it was about time for lifting those stems off the wet soil... That never helps the looks of any flower. At least we had one vase full for enjoyment. Your profession was different than anything to do with horticulture. We both have been in that sector all our lives; so this is natural.

Your Crocosmia are beautiful, Mariette, especially viewed on your lovely balcony overlooking your very green lawn. They do look very nice in your pretty vase. We have Crocosmia in Washington State, too. My son has a very large variety by his front door that is taller than me! They are so bright - like a tall flame. I love them. Hugs, xoxo

DeleteThose flowers and others were the highlights so far for our summer. Just went outside to change the bottles for the hummingbirds. It is so muddy that you do sink into the soil... Bah! Who knows August will let our gardens dry and show better, less humid and rainy weather.

ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely plant. I don't think I have ever seen this blossom. The color is so bright it lights up a cloudy day. Is it normal to have that variation on one plant (the spotted blossom)?
