Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Mushroom Cultivation Education. Saas im Prättigau, Switzerland where Pieter stayed when Skiing

Church of St. Laurentius in Saas im Prättigau, Switzerland near Davos around ten o'clock in the morning.
This is the little town, where Pieter did stay while skiing...
Remember, Pieter was an avid photographer, so he also tried this one in black & white...
What do you like best?
Church originally dates from 1290 but got rebuild several times.
Walking around the Church; but be careful in the snow!
These slides got scanned by me in December of 2013 and one has to keep in mind that they went THREE TIMES in a container across the Atlantic Ocean. Not so good for their gelatin coating as it gets affected by moisture.
But I'm very pleased with what I ended up with, all the way from 1963...
Mainly homes are build in wood.
Just a cozy little town with spectacular views.
After a fire in 1735 all wooden homes in the city center had to be rebuild...
This is the former City Hall that is now being used as an Inn
'Gasthaus zum Rathaus' is written in 'Old German' which we still had to study in Highschool, is not easy to read!
Gasthaus Madrisa is another typical Swiss Inn.
Madrisa is a mountain section.
This was the 2nd home from the family Kuhn, where Pieter stayed when going to Switzerland for advising them in mushroom growing and having some time for skiing or sight seeing.
You notice how much wood is being stacked under the balcony to the side and behind buildings?
The saying was: 'A true Swiss has wood at his doorstep'
It also created of course a tremendous fire hazard...
Saas Village Square... To the right is the Post Office in this photo but it got closed in 2010 I read.
A closeup of the house on the left in the above photo. A typical Saas Prättigauer home.
Wish I could read what all is written at the very top.
Some locals would know!
Geraniums make it look so romantic...
This was the 'Postbureau Saas'

Stay tuned for more...

  2. Such beautiful photos of a quaint and lovely Swiss town, Mariette. Yes, I'd imagine having homes built of wood would be a fire hazard, but they are enchanting all the same.
    Blessings!

  5. OH this took me back to my time there, Not in that place where Pieter was, but in Switzerland itself. Do you know..until I was there I had never even seen a picture of a beautiful Swiss cow. I got to see the real thing! They are truly beautiful, I think. Was a beautiful Country Switzerland is. We were in the German speaking part more so than the others.

    1. Dearest Katie,
This was also the German speaking part in the East. On March 15 you will get to see your beautiful cows again! Swiss cheese and yogurt is SO tasty and one would like to start grazing there in the very lush meadows...
Switzerland is amazing, but you must be able to speak either Italian, French or German.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

Thanks and guess it is even more so, considering the year 1963...

  7. What beautiful buildings and what a pity the wooden houses were damaged in a fire.
The photos kept well after such a long time.

Yes, both of us are very well and yesterday we enjoyed biking together in 24°C.
Thank you for liking Gasthaus zum Rathaus; it is a medieval village and these slides are from 1963 from Pieter's active photographing years.

      Mariette

  12. Wonderful that you are taking the time to scan all your slides. I used to love to ski, and dreamed about one day skiing in Switzerland (or anywhere in Europe!). We did take a ski trip to the Canadian Alps which was fun. It looks like a beautiful little village.

    1. Dearest Peter,
Yes, got the slides digitalized first, that was in 2013. Next the photo albums and scrapbooks and finally all our personal videos. What a mega task. We worked on publishing our book last year so finally I get to use these in a story so Pieter can relive it.
Oh, this Eastern part of Switzerland is like a dream!
      Hugs,
      Mariette
