About Me

Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Commercial Mushroom Cultivation Education. His practical handbook is in 9 languages and is called the MUSHROOM BIBLE: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2020/08/modern-mushroom-growing-2020-harvesting.html

Plug from Extension Cord GONE...

When Pieter wanted to start working in our wood garden, he discovered that some garden critter (?) was against his clearing activities...

It will remain a mystery!
But Pieter repaired it and started working again.
Pieter is wearing his Moonlight t-shirt: THE WORLDS LARGEST MUSHROOM FARM
WORTHINGTON, PA
We both visited there on November 25, 1991 and were quite impressed by their cave mushroom farm in trays.
There were some 150 miles of underground caves in total...
That brings back memories of Dr. James Sinden...

  1. Are those huge mushroom caves still there Mariette?
At least they would be cooler than above ground I guess - I need to find a cave for myself, lol!

    1. Dearest Mary,
No doubt those caves are still there but not for mushroom growing.
It sure is cooler than above ground and that makes their growing cycle too slow and not competitive for being profitable.
Would you really want to give up seeing any daylight, just for feeling 'cooler'?
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  2. Hello Mariette, Small animals definitely like gnawing on things, but to cut the plug clear off seems an oddity. Luckily, I had no such problems with my indoor wiring schemes. It it a good thing to be handy with such repairs. Not only does it save a little money, but we can get right to the task at hand and not have to make extra trips to the store or to schedule and wait for service people.

It will always remain a mystery... but indeed a good thing for being able to handle such repairs yourself!

  3. That looks like some major cord gnawing. Can't imagine it was very tasty. ;) 150 miles of cave mushroom farming sounds very interesting.

    1. Dearest Tammy,
Yes, we both were puzzled by that cord gnawing over night...!
Those caves were quite amazing indeed but that time is over, no more mushroom growing in them.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    2. I will certainly agree with that! Amazing.

  4. Oh my gosh that was quite a lot of gnawing going on there, I wonder what it was that did the damage? We get the birds nibbling on the washing line etc but not quite as impressive as this Mariette 😊

    1. Dearest Travis,
Very busy critter or whatever working or chewing on that cord.
Yes, 1991 seems very long ago, and that underground mushroom growing company quit in 2009. We have been there, seen it and still have the t-shirt for remembering the days.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  6. What a mess! I wonder how long it took that critter to realize that what it was chewing on wasn't food. :)
    Blessings, Mariette!

    1. Dearest Martha Jane,
Who knows, it might have been a critter with teething problems?
Pieter quickly got it restored back to normal and it never happened since.

      Mariette

  10. Very odd why some creatures gnaw on such things. Do they taste good, I wonder?

    God bless.

  11. It has been a long time since a chewed cord has been in my experience, thank goodness. I am not a person who repairs and Katie refuses her services.

It is in fact a nasty experience and you're left wandering 'who' did it?!
Sure, Katie will not help you out with that.
