Eastern Kingsnake or Lampropeltis getula

The Eastern Kingsnake or Lampropeltis getula is harmless!
When I spotted this one, I ran to grab my camera...
It turned its head as if to say: Hurry up, I don't have all day, waiting for you!
Okay okay, I follow you, just move on...
Of course it went straight for the creek!
It never looked back at me again and went head first into the creek...
Knowing they love to be in the water, makes you realize how easily they could hid on the edge of the pond, in the mud... as well as snapping turtles.
Pieter sure has been very brave for: Cleaning Our Pond and Fountain ←click link

Have you 'followed' once or more times a snake?

  2. Hello Mariette, That was a handsome snake you captured with your camera. As kids we always had pet snakes that we caught in the fields. They sometimes escaped and our mother was not too happy finding them about the house, but she just told us to come and get them. Although the majority were garter snakes, There was quite a variety in Ohio--my brother even considered himself an amateur herpetologist.

    1. Dearest Jim,
This was a real big and handsome one indeed! If we would have grown up here, no doubt we would have done the same. Your brother no doubt knew a lot for being an amateur herpetologist.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  3. Haven't seen a snake since I was a kid when we used to sometimes get them in the yard. Definitely have never seen one that big. :)

    1. Dearest Tammy,
No doubt you have seen some in South Georgia. This one has been the best so far that I've encountered and it waited for me to get the camera...😉
      Hugs,

      Abrazos,
      Mariette

  6. Followed? Heck no my dear, I would have to run a mile in the opposite direction! I'm really nervous around snakes and never certain which are venomous. The neighbor who captured and dispersed of my 5 foot black snake - not venomous but could still give a nasty bite - told me there are no good snakes, and he's an outdoor/hunter type guy!

    1. Dearest Mary,
Well, I knew this one was a Kingsnake and thus I raced to grab the camera. We just got back from another bike ride and saw a run over FAT rattlesnake... Those are dangerous.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  8. I would run away... but in the opposite direction. I think it's the only animal that makes me sweat.

No, it would not make me sweat as long as it is not a venomous one and not around 'breakfast' time...😉

  9. I have followed a black snake once. But usually I go the other way and quickly. Now that I have the phone I may take picture next opportunity unless it is a venomous one.

Well, this was with the real camera and nowadays it is a lot easier and quicker with the iPhone.

  10. Was this snake in your garden? How frightening.

    God bless.

    1. Dearest Victor,
Yes, this Kingsnake was in our garden and it was not frightening at all!
Recognizing the different species, you know this one is the good guy. They eat rattlesnakes as part of their 'diet'.
      Hugs,
      Mariette
