About Me

Here I would love to share with you our travels and adventures as international mushroom consultants. MEMOIRS about husband Pieter Vedder, who was a SCIENTIFIC PIONEER in Commercial Mushroom Cultivation Education. His practical handbook is in 9 languages and is called the MUSHROOM BIBLE: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2020/08/modern-mushroom-growing-2020-harvesting.html

Acting like a CAT for Retrieving Pieter's Glasses

Wearing glasses is not always a blessing...
While doing some pruning and cutting of the underbrush, Pieter did swing the branches on the growing, large pile alongside the creek.
Oops, no glasses on his face... Where did they FLY off to?
This is just a photo from a beginning, rather flat pile...
This photo indicates better, that right there was the creek.
Now imagine a tall pile, where the glasses somewhere HUNG inside...
I had to climb on the pile along the creek's edge, for getting to them, without cracking too many of the branches so the glasses would not SHIFT.
Then reaching deep inside the pile for actually retrieving them.
GOT THEM with several scratches on arms and legs, but Pieter was so grateful!
Never a dull moment for both of us and lots of 'unexpected — not planned for' incidents.
~
One other incident where Pieter was carrying away pruned off branches, he flung his glasses off and retrieved the frame but one lens was missing...
So at the end of the day, after weeding, and before coming inside for a shower and supper, I thought hmm, WHERE could that lens be?
Obviously it fell down, so I literally went down on my belly and peered over the path, where Pieter had walked and dragged off those branches, before flinging them onto the pile.
And yes, there was something glistening in the dirt between the dry leaves.
Got the lens and walked inside with my hand behind my back, telling Pieter that I had a gift for him.
You should have seen that HUGE SMILE!

Have any of you ever lost your glasses, or a single lens, at a very odd place?

  1. Hello Mariette, A lens in a brushpile sounds as bad as a needle in a haystack! Once I was in a rowboat with my brother fishing, when all of a sudden I felt something hit the side of my face, and my glasses were pulled off and flew into the lake, so there was no retrieving them. I spent an awkward few days until I could get a new pair, but considering how close that flying hook came to my eye, I consider this a lucky incident--I was not even scratched.

    1. Dearest Jim,
That definitely was what they so aptly name a close call! Wow, you were lucky and those awkward days did pass. Everyone wearing glasses has to more or less watch out constantly.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    1. Dearest Kim,
Yes, that was a big gamble first for spotting them and then for retrieving them!
You are right, I literally have ONE good eye, the other one is legally blind... can't read with it nor drive a car. That's also why I was a bit nervous for having my cataract surgery done, considering there always is a little risk. But even my bad eye improved, not that I can read but it far better coordinates.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. That sounds so familiar! My husband constantly discards or breaks the glasses.

  6. That's quite the story, Mariette; you were so fortunate to find both the glasses and the lost lens. I know Pieter was most grateful for your tenacity.
    Blessings!

    1. Dearest Martha,
Oh, we both were so happy that I managed to climb that stack of branches and reach in for retrieving those glasses. And the lens was also amazing. Happy moments that mean more than any gift at the moment!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

Viele Grüsse an dich. Frohe Zeit für dich. Viola

Wie herrlich ja um mit dem Rad in den Städten zu fahren!

  8. I've already lost a lens in my glasses (I use it to read and work on sewing) when I changed my clothes. At the time I looked on the floor but I couldn't find it. I went to find the lens inside the washing machine. It is true!

You were very lucky for thinking about the washing machine and retrieving it there!
We all will encounter those things, one way or another.

    1. Dearest Jo-Anne,
The glasses were visible but the trick was not having them fall deeper into that pile... and gone forever.
Lucky I was indeed, for the price of some scratches and the lens on the ground was also lots of luck. Once there has been walked over, it disappears deeper into the soil and gone out of sight forever.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    1. Beste Willy,
      Liefs,
      Mariette
