The Silver Bond Pin was awarded to Mrs. Vedder-Peer

Husband Pieter's Mom was the first secretary of the local association and she received a federal award.
This was on Thursday, November 20 in 1986.
Mr. Hermkens of the Federal Board, pinning on the federal silver award for Mrs. Vedder, the first secretary of the local association.
Mrs. Vedder's personal copy that she mailed to the USA...
April 1987... quite a while later!

LIFE'S
WINDOW
Department Horst 'Lambertus-Norbertus'
On Thursday November 20 of 1986, the 25th anniversary of this department got celebrated.
The festivity started with a eucharistic celebration, with the theme of supporting each other.
During the party meeting, Mr. Hermkens did pin on the gold and silver awards.
On Saturday November 22, a reception took place that enjoyed a lot of interest from all groups and associations of the population of Horst. The mayor then opened the exhibition 'Elderly and their hobbies'.
Festive celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Catholic Association for the Elderly.
This was in the local newspaper and Pieter's Mom mailed it to us, inside her not yet dried up handwritten airmail letter... hence the ink marks.

Did you notice that my 91-year old Mother-in-law was wearing a hair net?
Popular at that time, especially during windy weather, instead of having to use hairspray.
Eco friendly but that is all gone now...
This was exactly three years + 1 day before her death on November 21, 1989 when we were living and working in Italy.
A timely honor...!
Saying our goodbye to Pieter's Mom...
Too bad, she closed her eyes and we had these developed back in the USA, no way of going back and doing it over!
Pieter having said farewell to his Mom on November 7, before departing back to Georgia/USA...
This was our 9th trip back to The Netherlands on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
We went to Regensburg before, for attending the German Mushroom Conference.
Me, after our goodbye. Standing in front of this newly built Elderly Home.
Wearing my favorite boots, also gifted one time by our Italian mushroom friends.
Pieter standing near the entrance/exit with a new gift, his 'The Bridge' fine Italian leather bag.
Our Italian mushroom friends gifted Pieter a nice blue Burberry shirt and this leather bag on November 3, for some advice during our barely three days being in Italy before flying back to Düsseldorf, Germany.
~
We had also driven in our Fiat Uno rental car, all the way to Regensburg in Germany for the German Mushroom Conference and from there by car to Bordeaux in France, see links below.
There was very little time for being with family but we tried our best.
It is so sad that the entire building is GONE and new apartments have been built on this spot.
Government policies have changed and elderly have to stay at home, or being cared for by their children; called 'informal care'...

Fond Memories of our 1st Trip into México - Tijuana

On Saturday, March 9 of 1985, Campbell Soup's Pescadero farm manager Don Richards and wife Donna, with whom we'd stayed for 3 nights (see previous post below), did drop us off at the airport in San Francisco for our flight to San Diego at 13:30.
Pieter had to lecture at the 5th North American Conference...
We stayed at the Sheraton, Harbor Island (East) in room 408 and met with several international friends!
Together with Pieter's Dutch friend Chris van Zon, we did drive on Sunday, March 10, after breakfast, to Tijuana in México.
Pieter and I in Tijuana holding hands...
This was at the Don Quijote restaurant where we all three ate lunch.
Guess this was Señor Don Quijote himself and I pulled his beard...
Glad friend Chris captured some photos from both of us!
We enjoyed strolling around that Sunday!
Chris is watching something and see that little girl looking up at him...
It made me laugh.
That young man is hopeful that we will purchase some of his ceramics but HOW to fly home with it?!
Macrame plant hangers, bags and baskets... so many unique hand made things.
An endless selection and all on a Sunday!
Basura (trash bin...).
All we did buy were two Samba Balls and you can see them hanging in our staircase area, previous post.
At that time Tijuana was only about 600,000 inhabitants and now 2,200,000 and it is no longer safe.
Adiós Tijuana, we have to go back to our San Diego Sheraton hotel, getting ready for the Conference's reception at 18:00!
At least I could practice my Spanish for a couple of fun hours.
For Victor's comment that it looked like a very hot day. No, it definitely was NOT and you also could tell by what people were wearing...

Special Mushroom Friends Don and Donna Richards

We both flew to San Francisco, California on Wednesday, March 6 of 1985, and got picked up by one of the  Pescadero mushroom farm people; Ed Zoliniak.
Pieter had to do a farm review for Campbell Soup.
We did not get dropped off at a hotel, but instead at the home of the manager... Don Richards or Daddy Don as he affectionately got called.
His wife Donna was partly paralyzed... she toured me around on my very 1st visit in October 1983 and we'd gathered at their home before going to dinner at the Shadowbrook restaurant in Capitola, California.
~
We got the home key on Thursday, and also their Ford LTD, for going to the farm till noon and then to the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton together.
A HUGE Redwood tree...
Even both of us together still do dwarf in front of this Redwood giant...
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean
Admiring a spring garden, probably at The Greenhouse in Soquel, California.
Flowers and plants always make me so happy...
My blouse from Hungary with hand embroidery blended in well here.
Don Richards, the Pescadero mushroom farm manager with his wife Donna and Pieter before they left with us, back to the SF airport for our flight...
Flying to San Diego for the 5th North American Mushroom Conference.
Don, me and Donna Richardson
So glad that I did clean on Friday, all outside lower windows for Donna, as she could not do such chores.
Donna went to heaven early September of 1988 when Don lived at 1393 Pleasant Hill Street in Escondido, CA 92026
Wish one of their children or grandchildren would read this!

Pieter was Member of the Photo Club and took this Photo at the Liège/Belgium Farmers Market

With the entire Photo Club, where Pieter for years was an avid member of, they went to Liège in Belgium to the Farmers Market.

This was in the 1970s

An older Belgian gent (look at his cufflinks!) holding his puppy inside a Jaffa oranges crate...
While in the other hand holding a sausage for the puppy to feed on.

With this Photo Club the members got to photograph certain subjects and they had to develop and adjust their photos all by themself.
Pieter did have his own dark room inside the Dutch Training Centre for Mushroom Growing as he also was an avid photographer for training purposes.
Slides for use inside the classroom and for lectures at Congresses, Conferences .
Both, in macro and normal.
Pieter also produced the photos for his many books, all himself!

This very photo earned Pieter a 2nd place award at the local Dublin Fine Arts photography exhibit on January 10, 1993

Caring for our Squirrels while at 7th North American Mushroom Conference in New Orleans

On Thursday, March 3 of 1988, we both had put out the entire box with pecan nuts, on our patio.

This was meant to feed our 'tamed' squirrels that would be without us for a while, while we drove to New Orleans for attending the 7th North American Mushroom Conference, see link below post.

On February 19, we did purchase these Pecans at the Rotary Club's auction.
So we put the box on the patio, under the roofed area.
Right away our furry friends showed up!

Ah, you got us pecans...?
We thought that they each day would get some to EAT!

Nope, they went to the bottom of that box, the very day we put them out!
They buried them in our yard!

All tuckered out, on the tiles of our patio...
We were hoping that they would find all their burial spots!

Below you find previous posts about the Conference we both were heading to:

Dr. Pieter Vedder CO and Temperature Management
Husband Pieter was the speaker on the 1st day and he also was one of the first ones to perform.
He got introduced by Michael L. Pia...
Especially for those that only read Pieter J.C. Vedder's Publications but never heard his voice...

Review Quotation: Pieter J.C. Vedder; One of the Best Teachers in Mushroom Growing in the World

It is quite special for hearing your boss brag about you at a Conference!
Not just any Conference, but at the 7th North American Mushroom Conference,
March 8, 1988, in New Orleans
Review Quotation: Pieter J.C. Vedder; One of the Best Teachers in Mushroom Growing click below, for hearing those words, spoken by Pieter's boss, on video.
Short clip...
Don't forget to click on 'CC' for seeing English caption...
RIGHT ON TARGET
with a beautiful stylized mushroom...
Just some of Dr. Miller's talk in text...
Followed by the top image.
Pieter mentioned, Dr. Miller should have phrased it better, for not growing mushrooms on aluminium racks but instead they grow ON COMPOST! It is the people of course, that make a good substrate (compost) or not...
On the 1st day of the Conference, husband Pieter was a speaker for the 2nd session.
The next day, during the 9th session, Dr. Robert Miller was the speaker about a Large Size Farm. Where I marked ON VIDEO VOICE in red.
That large farm was Campbell Soup's Mushroom Division

A treasure for having these spoken words!

Used them for the Indie Publishing of our new book: modern mushroom growing 2020 harvesting as one of its Editorial Reviews. Amazon is listing full information! Others might omit it...

Pieter in Suspenders Then and Now

Whenever one travels, there is a chance you come upon unique finds.
Thus was the case on our trip to South Africa where husband Pieter lectured at a conference and where both of us traveled all around for visiting numerous mushroom farms.
On Monday, November 18 of 1985, we found this couture shirt of Lanvin for only $ 32.00 due to the fluctuation of the South African Rand.
Here on June 22, 1986 husband Pieter is wearing it with his white cotton pique pants and leather suspenders.
Fast forward, 24 years later, same husband, same cotton pique pants and new leather suspenders.
Now paired with an Outlet find from Last Call by Neiman Marcus at the Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass, FL.
This is a Brioni shirt, that we found for a steal!
Husband Pieter never gained any weight, just like me; same size all the time.
The Brioni shirt needs to be worn with cuff links but Pieter got several pair.
You can also see the detail of the pique pants where I stitched the crease, so it always stays in impeccable and thus avoiding a double crease.
See previous post below.

Do you like suspenders?

Lecture by Pieter and Stay at UNESCO site Regensburg during German Mushroom Conference

Our 9th trip to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, we rented a Fiat Uno for using within Europe.
On Thursday, October 23, 1986 we both drove in our rental car from The Netherlands to Regensburg in Germany.
Around 650 km at that time or 404 miles.
This is the famous St. Peter Cathedral in Gothic architecture.
We stayed at the Hotel Kaiserhof am Dom in Regensburg/Germany just click link.
Parking was a bit tricky on this medieval Plaza around the Cathedral!
After a walk together through the city center we went to sleep under the down duvet.
On Friday, October 24, Pieter did present his lecture and this is one of the very rare occasions that he got paid for doing so! He received D.M. 1,000.00.
In the afternoon I joined the ladies on a bus tour to Kehlheim...
We visited the beautiful Asamkirche des Klosters Weltenburg, or Asam Church of Weltenburg Abbey. Just click through on link above and select English...
The painting on the ceiling in 1745 by Franz Asam (son of Cosmas Damian Asam, late Baroque painter and architect) represents the Last Judgment.
Next we went by boat through the Danube Gorge Nature Reserve and it was spectacular with all its fall colors! Enjoy a spectacular English spoken video: Benediktinerabtei Weltenburt (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide by clicking through.
Danube Gorge Nature Reserve click through to read more.
Kelheim - Weltenburg with the Abbey bottom left and the Danube Gorge above in center left... Center top and right is Regensburg with St. Peter Cathedral and Stone Bridge.
Wish my Pieter could have been with me...
We enjoyed a good German dinner at Bischofshof Braustuben (click through), together with Ferdinand Dohme and his family from Oldendorf, Germany and Hans Tschierpe from Wetzikon, Switzerland.
On Saturday, October 25, while Pieter still had some business and an afternoon excursion to the Graf (Count) Ballestrem, Pilzkulturen GmbH & Co KG (Mushroom plant) in Trisching about 45 minutes to the north of Regensburg, I had another City Walk with the Ladies at 9:00.
Had to get a picture of this fun Daxl Schuh (Dachshund Shoe) store front.
My cute black & tan Mauzie girl was no longer with us, since August 29 of 1985... MISSED her so much and still miss her.
We visited the medieval City Hall from the 2nd half of the 16th Century - Click here: Places to see in (Regensburg - Germany) Altes Rathaus and enjoy.
My entire life I will never forget this GRUESOME ROOM:
The original preserved Fragstatt (Questioning Place) from the Middle Ages inside the Old Town Hall.
'Die im original erhaltene Fragstatt aus dem Mittelalter im Alten Rathaus...'
We got to see lots of Patrician Homes, from the wealthy upperclass back then.
Also the home where German writer and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ones lived.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - Regensburg - Bavaria/Germany - GOETHE lived here on September 4, 1786, in the former Gasthaus zum weissen Lamm just click through.
The plaque that is seen in above photo...
We ended that Saturday with a Party Night for all the Conference Participants.
Those were two wonderful days, spent in such a fabulous historic city.

Hope you enjoyed this special city on the Danube as much as I did for those two short days!

Stay tuned for where our cute Fiat Uno rental car brought us next...
