Delivering Funds to Dena Upakara in Wonosobo, Indonesia where Foster Daughter Anita hails from

On June 17 of 1995, we did hand deliver the donations from our local Rotary Club of Dublin, Georgia, USA
Delivering the Rotary Club of Dublin, Georgia, USA money to the Dena Upakara boarding school for girls with a hearing impediment.
Pieter handing the US $ 500.00 that we both hand carried to Indonesia when traveling for our consulting work.
A sure way for having 100% of the funds being delivered, and used for the cause!
Happy smiles!
We again delivered the US $ 500 from Rotary Club of Dublin, Georgia, USA on July 2, 1996.
Sister Antonie was very pleased with this gift!
Several of the girls from the boarding school were present as we came to deliver the funds.
Remember, that we used to have about 16 of these girls, come to our home while living and working in Indonesia.
We became their substitute Papa & Mama, as they only ONCE got to see their real Parents during their vacation, as most did not have the means for coming to Central Java to visit them.
On December 15, 1990, when living in Wonosobo we visited Dena Upakara and got to talk to Sister Henricia van Vijfeijke in Dutch!
Sister Henricia was from the Congregation Daughters of Mary and Joseph, who have a commitment to the deaf, blind and disabled. Founded in 1820 and they went to Brazil, Congo, China and Indonesia.
Surprise to us that she also happened to be a first cousin of Padre Juan Janssen who married us, in Chile; he sure blessed our blissful relationship!
We did present her after our work on December 18, with an article about her first cousin in Chile.
Small world!
Things happen for a reason...

We have our foster daughter Anita from this very boarding school!

Dr. James W. Sinden was one of Pieter's mentors

SINDEN ON MUSHROOMS
HAUSER
Pieter received this book from one of his mentors, Dr. James W. Sinden, with a neat fountain pen written message inside...
Sinden on Mushrooms
Collected Papers by
Dr. J.W. Sinden and Associated Authors
Sorry for the 'odd' scan by me, using the iPad as the previous scanner did constantly interfere with my Mac, we recycled it!
It was Fred C. Atkins (see previous post below) who wrote the INTRODUCTION
This is just part of the collected papers as I don't want to bore you with that...
Just on the side, writing a book (original content!) or publishing a compilation and adding other authors is not the same!
Just as Roel Dreve from Mushroom Business here stated about writing a comprehensive mushroom cultivation manual. You had Bels (Pieter's boss) and Atkins (the one my previous post was about) and Kligman and later Van Griensven. But the latter and Vedder's book seem to have stood the test of time and are still being sought–after today.
Well, the late Fred C. Atkin's books are STILL BEING SOLD but for decades L.J.L.D. Van Griensven's book has not been available.
And, as Amazon UK, here above correctly states, he was not the writer but the EDITOR!
As written in the Dutch Champignoncultuur 1968-6 (click for ISMS uploaded Pdf) about a visitor at the Experimental Station in Horst where one of the youngest employees made the mistake to explain to a visitor how one lets spores germinate to make mushroom spawn... The visitor said that she knew 'something' about it as she was the famous Dr. E. Hauser
She was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland and she married Ulrich Hauser
She later married Dr. James W. Sinden...
Husband Pieter has met Erica Hauser, while on vacation in the German Schwarzwald, he paid a visit to their laboratory in Gossau, Switzerland, and she graciously had arranged a very nice hotel room for all three, including little adopted daughter Lizzy.
For several decades Dr. James W. Sinden got married to Edith Sigel
Yes, I too have personally met Dr. James W. Sinden and Edith Sigel.
My previous writing about Harvesting, got dedicated to DR. JAMES W. SINDEN
the man who meant so much to us and everyone in the industry.
In our latest published book: modern mushroom growing 2020 - harvesting there are 9 mentions of Dr. Sinden and this one on page 411 is a very special one.
Pieter used this picture, received from Dr. Sinden, made through an electronic microscope, from the surface tissue of mushroom caps (enlargement 2,000x). On the left, clean hyphae without bacteria; on the right, tissue loaded with Pseudomonas bacteria, causing the brown blotch.
We received a letter note from Edith Sigel-Sinden from February 20, 1995
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Vedder,
Thank you for your thoughtful letter of condolence and the special Valentine greeting. I appreciate your kind sympathy. It is comforting to know so many care and are sharing their fondest memories of Dr. Sinden with me, I treasure them. They sustain me. I am happy the Sinden Award was an outstanding event for Pieter.
Dr. Sinden touched so many lives in so many special ways.
All Best wishes for continued success and happiness.
Sincerely,
Edith
Indeed, for Pieter receiving the prestigious Sinden Award, named after Dr. Sinden, was the highlight of his career!
October 7, 1982 when Pieter was the very first non British recipient of the prestigious Sinden Award.
Pieter is pictured here with Dr. Jim Sinden.
Published in 1983-1 The Mushroom Journal (click for ISMS uploaded Pdf)
Dr. Sinden was honored by mushroom-growing associations throughout the world, as well as by the International Society for Mushroom Science (ISMS) for 50 years of dedicated service to the industry in 1980. In addition, the Sinden Awards were established by the Mushroom Growers Association of Great Britain: One is presented for the most outstanding practical contribution to the mushroom industry in research, development, advisory work, communications, and leadership.
From a publication in The American Phytopathological Society (APS) James W. Sinden, 1902 to 1994

Lots of fond memories and Dr. Jim Sinden's name will live on forever!

Prambanan Hindu Temple in Yogyakarta, Indonesia a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Close to Yogyakarta on the Island of Java, Indonesia...
Prambanan Hindu Temple built in the 9th Century
This is a slide from December 1972, showing Pieter's adopted daughter Lizzy when we was almost 9... their first trip to Indonesia to advise the mushroom project.
On May 8 of 1983, when I got to see it for the first time, they were renovating it.
The Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu Temple complex in Indonesia.
In the 16th Century it got completely knocked down and buried, due to a massive earthquake and only got rediscovered in 1811.
It took another 100 years before they finally started to restore it; after first lots of things had been looted or stones being used for foundation stones as building material...
From a post card as we were unable to make an undisturbed photo without scaffolds.
In 1991 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Pieter in his batik shirt, standing in the center left of this photo...
This one I took from above and you can see a bit more of the renovation going on
Our then super8 film camera, but from the 3 films we had, 2 cartridges got lost by Kodak...
Above me you clearly can see how the story of the Ramayana got carved out in stone.

R.I.P. Sweet Barty Boy

On October 28, 2020 we had to let our sweet Barty boy go...

Tried hard to comfort him and to keep him healthy, with some more meds from vet Amanda.

He did not eat his wet food with the antibiotics after two days of 'accepting' it being added.

Other meds, I managed but there was no improvement.

I'd stayed with him for a total of two weeks, in the Rose Suite, a kind of a kitty hospice... for letting him have his rest, feeling loved and cared for. Yes, like a baby, feeding him many times little meals.

But on Wednesday, October 28, we had vet Amanda come to our home and inside the Rose Suite, in my arms he went to eternity... peacefully.

I'd carried him outside one final time to meet all of his siblings by adoption and for being one last time inside the gazebo, his favorite spot.

Then I let him lounge on the lawn, close to the walkway from the driveway towards the Rose Suite.

He was so happy, so at peace and that felt good!

~

Before supper time for his siblings, I placed him inside the kitty bed in the garage so they all knew he was gone... We have done so also with Sacha girl before.

After having our tea and mixed nuts, we went together to the spot behind the greenhouse, for his burial.

That was it.

Barty Vedder: March 17, 2004 - October 28, 2020

16 years and 7 months...

On Thursday afternoon, June 17, 2004 over a cup of tea, we spotted this adorable kitten 'SALEM'... (right) in our local newspaper.
He so resembled my Dutch kitten Bartje...
So next day, after Rotary Club lunch, Pieter went to the Humane Society to look at them, he got to see also NOISY, his sister.
Then we both went back to get SALEM!
It was love at first sight, Barty as we called him instead, did suck on my earlobe while holding him and also on my pinky...
We took  this 1.4 kg (3 pound) kitten home with us.
I held him and never put him back in his cage. His sister already got adopted, so I've never seen her.
We took him home to our other Spooky boy, who met his baby brother with such love.
He gave him a 'bath' and cuddled him like he was his Mama, and that for a male cat.
June 27, Spooky our tuxedo boy with Barty-baby on the oak hocker with cotton mat, in front of our veranda door.
SO ADORABLE!
On July 08, 2005, Pieter holding our now mature Barty boy...
He had big eyes!
August 11, 2005, me holding Barty
His big eyes could look right into one's soul...
Barty had a few white hair on his chest and also his whiskers on one side were lighter.
Here he is on March 29, 2007 on the wood trail in our garden.
This is so adorable!
Barty holding and comforting his baby brother Bandido on August 13, 2007 after Bandido got neutered...
Like: 'Come here; I know how that feels!'
Seen here is Barty's white pluck of hair on his under belly...
June 30, 2008 shows Barty on top of the oak wall unit in the living room.
He jumped on top, from the backrest of our leather love seat!
Barty was quite an artist in jumping high...
September 12, 2008 Barty in the gazebo, his favorite spot...
Photo taken by Anita, our Foster Daughter from Indonesia, who stayed with us at the time.
She also stayed with us when Barty still was a young kitten and they both loved each other very much!
Barty on his 5th Birthday, March 17 of 2009, in front of the  open window with screen, in our bathroom.
He sure loved that spot, where he could hear and watch the birdies...
August 16, 2011 on the walkway to the Rose Suite with our gazebo in the back.
Just about 20 minutes before his death, I had let him lounge in the grass, exactly in this spot, seen to the right...
Whenever we were in the garden, most of our kittens were following us.
So did Barty on October 7, 2011 when he wanted to show off his climbing skills.
He rushed up into this Crepe Myrtle tree, behind our gazebo.
Here too, you clearly can see his white spot on the underbelly...
October 7, 2011 after Barty jumped down and looking like; did you see this Mami?
Yes, we saw you do this and we also see your white underbelly...
A pensive Barty on August 18, 2012 on the lawn...
Here Barty is in dreamland... underneath the wooden cherubs.
He slept on the European square pillow, which is under our standard pillow.
Photo from July 13, 2012
July 13, 2012 closeup of Barty smiling... He sure was a happy kitten!
March 10, 2013, once again on the wood trail...
Barty lounging in front of our gazebo on April 3, 2014.
He also loved to lounge on the two side benches or on a chair.
Barty on his Birthday, March 17 of 2015, on the tiny brick patio below the stairs to our veranda.
In the evening, Barty very much was my office kitty!
Here he lounges on my previous office chair on August 24, 2015
Barty was a perfect lap kitty!!!
Barty on February 20, 2016, on top of the retainer wall alongside the driveway.
Lounging inside the gazebo on April 2, 2017...
Barty lounging on top of the guest bed, on one of their kitty blankets.
This was April 5, 2018
This is Barty on May 5, 2020... already a lot skinnier and you clearly can see his white whiskers.
On his final day his weight was 3 kg or 6.6 pound...
This very sweet and gentle boy will be so missed!
He has been my special cat nurse, see post below: Angels Birthdays & Fortunes.
No doubt they do have a great sense for feeling someone's well being!
He could literally put his 'arms' around my neck, so comforting... Will sure miss that but we both are grateful for having had him this long.
He was like a special black angel; almost hard to believe that he was a kitty!
Those that never have had such a special pet, probably can't understand, but those that do know, will recognize this special affection and their loyal love.
